Tailgate Step Ladder

I have the factory bed step, a small ladder that is easy to use and works good as a seat as well, and I rigged a pole so I can fish stuff out of the box without climbing in.



Ladder has a 375 LB capacity.




Pole extends so I can reach the front of the 8' box.


A heavy duty 4" paint roller with no roller on it works as the hook.

I bought one of these on sale at CTC years ago. They have them all over the store for staff to use, so, naturally, I had tested them excessively and knew how incredibly stable they were.

If anyone is feeling a bit challenged getting into/out of their truck bed, these types of units are very stable and make climbing a breeze.

Depending on your upper body strength, you may want to find something a bit lighter but these things make for a very stable climbing platform. This one only weighs 12 pounds.

You and me both,lol.I bought a couple of the 3 step stools when Crappy Tire had them on sale to. They work good for getting in and out of a truck bed,or cleaning/polishing a car/truck as they're very stable ,at least when they're on a good surface

Nice setup. Has the advantage you can use the box as a handrail both yp and down. Does the attachment points for the ladder get in the way if you are sliding stuff across the tailgate.

I don' tthink so, it's only about 10 inches long and it has clips to remove the ladder if you need to

That ladder looks pretty cool, but not for me.

I often carry kayaks with a dropped tailgate covered with plywood. I'm heading out for a paddle in a few minutes, truck loaded with boats, picture to follow, later.

Street Glide, thanks. She's getting up in age but road around the country for 12 years heading to some twisty mountain road. At 68 slowing down the last couple of years. Just ride local but hope to get to ARK this fall.

I Been riding since 1971 !
Stopped riding a few years ago after knee rebuild and nerve damage in the back.
Holding up 900 lbs not a good idea lol
Rode Maine to Fla. several times for Bike week and visit family
Today I do not think my 72 Y/O butt would survive the ride lol

Was in Wyoming a few years ago, middle of nowhere. Pulled over on a very sloped turnout to take a break. It went over slowly. I'd seen girls at Harley shows demonstrating a procedure to walk your bike back up. I waited..... no girls showed up! Had to do it myself.
Middle if nowhere, I see looked around to see if anyone saw. The Antelopes were laughing.

Remember the days when you could use the pickup bed side to rest your forearms on and if you spied something in the bed that stoked your curiosity, just reach down without stretching and pick it up to examine.

This is literally the only thing I covet from Ford. If Ram could steal this design it would be my perfect truck. Still not enough reason to buy a Ford though.

This one from Amazon works for me. Just don’t try closing it by hand as it can be similar to a rat trap.

In case you are interested, the factory Mopar bumper step was cheaper than the AMP from Amazon when I got mine, but I ordered it as part of the build.

I have one similar to CrBear. But it is on a swivel so I can enter from side or back of the tailgate.

Great ladder but keep your eye on it as it ages it begins to rust. I have a tri-fold cover on the bed so out of sight out of mind. But I opened up the cover one day and had rust stains running down the tailgate.

It rusts on the inside of the tubes that are used and the water and rust come out through the weep holes that are in each tube. Ended up taking it out and Now that I see so many versions I’ll probably order a new one. Bottom line they are fantastic and I had mine installed for 6.5 years before removing.

I've been using a cheapy plastic step stool for years now.

Strategically placed below/beside the end of the bumper.
Right foot on the step (or left, if you prefer), left hand on the rear fender just above the taillight.
Left foot on the end of the bumper, lean forward and swing the right foot onto the tailgate.

I always enter on the driver's side, but you may prefer to enter from the other side. Watch out for the tailgate support wire when you swing your foot up, or else. LOL

Using this simple process with a small plastic step requires a fraction of the effort of freestyling your way in.

I tried a Mopar step at a stealership and hate it.
Also, I have a Roll-N-Lock cover, which limits the options for a ladder installation.

I often travel to scuba sites in my buddy's Ferd, and the retractable stairs with a grab pole in his tailgate are spectacular. Not enough to convert me, though.

Having the Amp step mounted under the rear bumper on the drivers side , can’t imagine a much easier way to step up on the tailgate, plus the fact it tucks under the bumper totally out of the way . I’m 78 , have had that step on my 2014 nearly since I bought the truck new in 2014 .

Had an ankle fusion done in 2023 on my right ankle , that ankle has zero flexibility, and I still have no issues getting in the bed of the truck with the Amp fold down step . I fold it down , grab a hold of the stake bed hole , and step up , same procedure getting back out .
