Thick Tire on Narrow rim

So my friend just told me that I can fit a 33"x12.5" wheel on my 20" Stock Rims. Is that possible? Or does he not know what he is talking about.

Basically are there wider tires that work on narrower rims? Does that even work?

Go to Tire Rack and look at the recommended wheel widths for a given tire by the tire manufacturer ... Now there will be those that will tell you it’s fine to go an inch under, or an inch over for those who like that “stretched” look ... But a pretty smart man once said, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should ....

Back in my Jeep YJ days, it was very common to see 12.5” wide tires mounted on 8” wide rims.

I currently have 35” tall by 12.5” wide tires on my stock 20”x9” rims.

Also, just because the tire will fit on the rim, doesn’t mean that it will fit on the truck.
My truck is lifted, and I still have to run spacers to keep the inside sidewall of the tire from rubbing on the knuckles.

I have 35x12.50r20’s on stock 20x9 sport rims with Bilstein 2.8” level. I believe the width would be the problem on stock 20x8 rims. You could run spacers.
I ran a 34” tall, 11” wide without the level on my 20x9 sport rims without issue.

Look at the tire manufacturers website, they should have a size chart with recommended rim widths.

I ran 33x12.5 on stock 20x8 rims with no issue at all, I did run lower tire pressure than recommended just to be safe from uneven wear in the middle of the tire

Those look really Good, I was going to run 1.75" wheel spacers with a leveling kit

Min approved wheel for a 33x12.5x20 tire will be 8.5" can you run those in a 20x8 wheel? Sure thing. You may see some abnormal tire wear though. 285/60/20 will be more appropriate for a 20x8" wheel.

anything that doesn't fall within the recommended range by the tire manufacturer (and that you can find a shop that will mount them) falls under your own risk. Possibly voids the warranty also

Having said that. I had 35x12.5x17 tires mounted on 17x7.5" jeep wheels and wheeled them pretty hard. I sold them to a guy I wheel with, he is still wheeling them and harder than I did.

Want to add that I am not telling anybody that it is right, wrong, safe or dangerous. Just stating my person experience of “falling under my own risk”
