Decent SQ, GPS, bluetooth, video input/output..got excited about the DNN990 but looks like a piece of crap. Used to have an Eclipse, which i miss dearly.

i have had all pioneer, alpine, kenwood in their touch screen units. i personally liked the UI of the kenwood the best.

what i would recommend is go to like a best buy where they carry all 3 brands. play with them and see what one you prefer. you have a "generous" budget so it should get you a nice radio

now keep in mind that you will get some better sound, but not the greatest. realize that when you are shopping what you see them advertise for power is max power. a radio will never use its max power. look at the rms rating of the decks. if its like it ws back in the day alpine used to have the highest rms rating (it been a long time since i sold them)

I lIke Kenwood, alpine, and pioneer but I don't really like the looks of most of the new Kenwood and pioneer but you may. I've always been a big fan of alpine. Now that I have the money to spend that what I get for Hu. I have a 4 year old flip out in my ram got a deal I couldn't pass up. Me and my buddy's mostly now have all alpine Hu ranging from last year's models down to early 90s models in beat truck for the older. All still work

I'm really aiming to be under that 700-800 mark, actually. 1K was a little high.

I think i've narrowed down to two.

GPS: AVH-7000NEX
Amazon.com : PIONEER AVIC-7000NEX 7" Double-DIN NEX Navigation A/V Receiver with WVGA Touchscreen, HD Radio(R) Ready, SiriusXM(TM) Ready, AppRadio(R) Mode, 7.9 Million POIs & Text-to-Speech Voice Guidance : Car Electronics

I originally had picked out the 6000NEX, its 100 or so cheaper, but smaller non-HD screen and a few less features.

Non-GPS: AVH-4000NEX
Amazon.com : Pioneer AVH4000NEX 7"DETACH FACE/2DIN/DVD/XM/IPHO : Car Electronics

All the same features of the GPS version, but no GPS.. saves money.. Given i have great GPS with my phone with live (free) traffic and etc, wondering if i really want GPS maps that will be out of date by the time i install it?

IMO then do the cheaper one. it can do mirror link so you can actually display the phone maps on the radio.

Existing drops pretty well when new rolls out and yes there is always budget lines all the way up to top of the line. Your price falls I to mid to upper mid price range depending on what you want

I need that special cable though right? like $100 cable?

Yes you will but I think it can be found for $50-$60. It's been a while since I played with their appradio but I can tell you I was not happy with it, slow and cumbersome. Buy a HU based on a HU, not connectivity gimmicks that always change and are abandoned.

Those two units you listed are real nice and will be a great starting point for a good sounding system with a good EQ, Time Alignment, Corssover/Slope Contol, etc.

You'll have to decide if you really want GPS. The 4000 can do GPS with an add on unit but that unit is $300 so you'd save about $50 in the end if you went right for the 7000.

Ended up getting the AVH-3600XBHS. Inexpensive, and tons of options.

Best buy didnt have any of the install gear, so off to Amazon i go and now have to wait 2 days :( Boo.
