Hey guys I'm looking at trading in my 1500 and I'm considering upgrading to a 2500. Looking at both Power Wagons and Big Horn trims. I know the PW can't tow or haul as much as a regular 2500 but I'm okay with that. I don't do an incredible amount of hauling/towing. Mostly my boat and skidoos both easily in the 1500 tow capacities. I like the bigger look of the 2500s that you can't get out of just lifting a 1500. What is your guys mpg like in the 2500s with the 6.4? Does the PW get that much worse gas mileage than a regular 2500?

PW technically will get worse milage with it being higher, having more aggressive tires, and having 4.10 gears.

I have a

2016 CCLB 3500 srw 4X4
4.88 gears
35” tires

I get about 13mpg highway and 12 city. Towing just plan on 9mpg or less.

I get about the same, about 13-14 highway and 10-12 city. 9 towing

I traded my '14 1500 after a year for a '15 2500. 1/2 ton was just way over worked for what I do. But if I didn't haul / tow so much and so often, I'd prefer to have my 1500 back. I love my 2500's ability to get things done, but for daily driving, it's just heavy and cumbersome. for perspective, just imagine driving your 1500 everyday, with a full load in the back.

I've got a '17 PW, and since I don't drive much expressway I average around 14-15, though I've seen as high as 16.5 in the summer - empty. Towing it drops to 10-11. Expressway driving averages 12.5-13 at 70-75mph when I do get out there. I have heard that the '19+ ones with the 8 speed do better.

It also tows our 35' TT, or anything else I've put behind it, without issue or complaint. If you want to pull a fifth wheel or gooseneck with it, you'll be looking into airbags. There's more than enough power, gearing, axle, and brakes, just not enough spring.

Since you don't plan to be pulling anything large, the PW might work out for you. Just remember it's NOT going to get good mileage.

you're probably better off keeping the 1500 unless you really need the extra capacity. Mine with 35s get about 11mpg average. Plus empty it rides like an old Conestoga wagon lol

Hmm the gas mileage is definitely turning me off especially with the 89 octance price tag. I knew it wouldnt be as good as my 1500 with the 5.7 and 3.92 rear end but I didn't think it would be that much more either. May have to look into a Rebel instead or perhaps a Built to Serve in Gator, remind me of my first dodge, a 2007 Laramie in almost the exact same color.ed1ede6a091f87ec03774963fe5d02ee.jpg

Man, don't let gas mileage be the main thing hindering you from making the move. Always find it interesting how gas mileage seems to be the main concern for a lot of truck buyers.

Trucks aren't meant be *****-footed around town hoping to get a .3 mpg improvement from what was showing on your fuel economy reading. So many people ask me what kind of mileage I get on my Power Wagon. I always respond with "if I was worried about mpgs, I wouldn't have bought a truck and would have bought a Tesla or a Prius instead".

Go with the 2500 man you won't regret it!

PS: Just checked for gits and shigs and I'm averaging 14.4 mpg combined city and highway :D

It sounds like your stated reason is you want a 2500 for the look?

Aesthetics are subjective, but keep it in proportion if you're going to be cutting into your budget for family and lifestyle spending just over how tough your truck looks to you, it might not be a good purchase. Some guys have done well enough that they can have it all but most of us aren't in that category and if you're going to spend an extra 2 grand a year on fuel and tires that you could put into something that moves the needle for your loved ones, or a memorable vacation with your family - well you know what to do there.

Not trying to get personal but since you asked that's the advice I can offer.

I see it as a penny saved is a penny earned - always has been. So if you're going from 18mpg to 14mpg and put down 12k miles per year that's about 600 dollars a year at prices similar to what they are now.

If we're talking about losing some cash switching from a 1500 to a 2500, say you burn $5k on that, spend 600+ bucks a year on fuel, buy a new set of $1500 tires.. well we're around ten grand over the course of five years. I can tell you that (since I already have a perfectly good truck that meets all my needs) spending 10k more on what's really just an indulgence vs. spending the same $10k on paying off my house faster or remodeling the basement or taking a drive up to the arctic ocean after the borders open back up... all seems like a better use of the money.

You don't have to run 89 in it all the time. I only run the cheap stuff. Unless I'm towing heavy then I might splurge with a bottle of octane booster lol

Yup, I totally understand your reasoning here!

All comes down to whatever each person chooses to prioritize their money towards :happy160:

Keep in mind when those bottles say they "raise octane five points!" what they mean is like five decimal points... you might go from 87 to 87.5 - so it's not a bad idea to compare the cost of that bottle vs. the cost of premium that might be three or more whole octane numbers higher.

IDK if 2 grand one way or the other is going to be the difference between going on vacation or not, eating or not, etc, then one might want to reconsider buying a $50K - $60K truck in the first place.

:D In a perfect world you're right, but I know how much I make and median household income data + cost of living data + median debt information for the country are all readily available pieces of information - and we all know the number of people who have $60k trucks is disproportional with the number of people who probably should be spending $60k on a truck - or we could just look at how many 6, 7+ year car loans exist.

I bought a little winter commuter earlier this year, ten grand and they were offering me seven year terms on a five year old car. Dude! :banghead: :Big Laugh::Big Laugh: Let's dial that back a little!

My '19 Laramie 1500 effortlessly tows what I need it to tow and I get 16-18 mpg around town and 20 on the highway when not towing. Might be able to get a little more mpg if I had the 3.23 rear gears but I specifically wanted the 3.92 for towing my TT across country. The sweet spot for mpg on the highway is 60 mph and drops to 18 if I set the cruise control on 70. Unless I'm in a big hurry 60-65 mph is fine for me. The biggest plus in my book is the ride. It is so so comfortable and I would not trade that for a 2500 unless I routinely hauled >800lbs in the bed.

being the tight *** I am I would say that unless you really need that extra payload capacity and that your 1500 will do everything you need, save your money and keep your 1500, just my opinion.
