If it sounds almost like an exhaust heat shield that is loose and rattling, but only the lower frequencies while coming from the center of the vehicle, it's most likely your plenum. Mine made that noise, at first I thought it was just some loose bolt or something allowing for some hot metal on metal action. Turned out to be my plenum gasket, so much for thinking it was already done. Since i've replaced the gasket, no more tick/pinging sound.

Just like you I only heard it under light accel, or holding speed. I thought it was suspension noise for the longest time until I caught it one day in drive at a stoplight.

For these trucks, sure. It was and still is common for OEM plenum gaskets to go bad. Unless it was properly fixed by the previous owner or dealer, it is going to have the gasket break. The replacement isn't hard at all if you have the tools. I chose to service the valvetrain at the same time as I was already going to be working in the area. But that is not necessary, I just had some valves with out of spec valve lash to fix. I will say that pulling the valve covers made it easier to get my hands onto everything, not that it was hard before, it was just really easy after the valve covers were removed.
