I've been thinking of getting a backup camera.........well........yeah, I need one now. LOL my pretty rear bumper got a lil boo boo a few weeks ago, and I'm not feeling that crap.

So, here's my plan - I am probably going to nab a Mopar locking tailgate kit, and probably will replace the tailgate handle with the OEM one with the hole for the camera. I just need a camera that isn't ******.......

I have a Kenwood head unit, though I assume they all hook up the same? So, not sure if it matters on that. And, I want it to fit in the OEM handle, unless there is ANY reason that I shouldn't.......hell, I wouldn't mind having one that was larger and fit inside my hitch - its not like I use it :signs6: and it would be nicely hidden there, and I assume get a better view than off the tailgate handle?

Thoughts, ideas?

Wouldn't you want to be able to see your bumper??? Otherwise you would have no point of reference.. Maybe I misunderstood that..

I would go with the oem camera and tailgate handle. I went with a lockpick and the widest angle camera I could find and the view isn't as good as the oem camera.

Here is the camera i have hooked to my Kenwood head unit. Nothing fancy here, just a good, quality camera in my opinion. No more backing over the garbage can at the end of the driveway for me. :Stupid Me:

Mine has a key, but I am thinking of changing it to power.

I have fallen a victim to the backing up gremlins too. Backing into a parking spot at the gym there was a 70ish Chevy truck behind me, and it had a bull bar that would survive nuclear war, I saw it but the bullbar disappear on me as I was backing up from my line of site over my tailgate. Nice little crease in my bumper not a scratch on the tank on wheels. My friend told me he didn't even notice it till I said something, but I know it's there..........

the cmaera is something I NEVER would have paid for btu the truck they found us had it as part of the package. I do tow, and use it all the time to make sure I'm pulled ahead enough in parking lots. It's amazing.

JJ I know your truck will never see a trailer.....but if it did, you'd LOVE to look like an expert backing up to it first time!

The handle location is simply amazing. I can see everything great, whether its backing into a parking spot with my hitch on, or backing up to a trailer. I wouldn't put it down low like that pic, you won't get much use out of it there.

If it's easy enough to get your hands on an OEM camera, I'd go that route. Or even one from a 13 - I think that camera is even better than the pre-12s had from what I've seen.

save your money on buying the tailgate handle with the camera hole already in it. the stock handle is marked where the OEM camera would go. not to mention not all cameras are the same diameter. just pick a camera that you like and drill the hole to fit that camera. thats what i did. ive used taotronics brand license plate cameras before and never had a problem quality wise and they are relatively cheap ($20). for the flush mount camera that i put in my tailgate handle i decided to spend a few extra bucks and buy something nicer, so i went with a camera off amazon i think made by XO vision. a few guys on another forum recommended it so i figured id give it a go. camera itself works fine except grass and bushes show up with a purple tint for whatever reason. its not a big enough deal that i would change the camera out, but given the opportunity do it again, i would get another taotronics camera.
