If two different tires are the same listed size and same load capacity, is there a way to know what aspects of the tire result in different tire weights? Looking at some AT tires for our farm truck (F250; LT275/70R/18). For example, the Firestone Destination X/T is listed as weighing 50 lbs whereas the General Grabber A/TX is listed as weighing 61 lbs. Thanks.

Sidewall thickness. Tread thickness. I don’t think they’ll tell you why it weighs what it does. I know my 305/70r18 Mickey Thompson weigh 71lbs but some others are 75lbs and up. I think part of it is also sidewall overlap too and sidewall tread

Construction type with each manufacturer, number of plys, the material used for the plys, the rubber used...they are different for each.

Given two tires with the same load range, wouldn't the number of plies be the same?

Yes, they would. If comparing tires within the same load range, the number of plies will be irrelevant. The rest of OC455's list still applies. Think of it like wood, if that helps. If we each build a shelf with 2x4's to the same dimensions, they will not weigh exactly the same. The thickness and quality of the wood varies from distributor (slight, but still), maybe we used different kinds of screws, you used glue too...

Tires are just like people, some are thicker and more dense than others (no pun intended lol) and others are made of thinner material and weigh less. If these tires are just for a farm truck I wouldn’t put too much time and effort into figuring out the weight of the tires, if they’re made for your truck in the correct size and weight difference of even 20 or 30 pounds per tires are going to make that much of a difference.

On a passenger truck that’s gonna be travelling on the highway and where fuel efficiency might be of some importance, then we could be a factor there but overall it’s not really a huge deal depending on the use of the truck.
