Let's play a game I like to call: find the cause of the high rpm miss and hot start issues.

E87E093E-4D08-4E58-905C-C4CCF796DF14_zpsqaqnndlu.jpg

The plugs shown are from cylinders 1, 3, and 5 in order from left to right. Me thinks that cylinder 1 is running a little hotter than the rest, lol. A new set of plugs went in so we'll see how they hold up. The above plugs have about 5000kms on them but it was during the tuning process with the new blower and cylinder 1 has always been the hot cylinder with the 6.1L intake manifold.

Ceramic is no joke. Hopefully you don't have any damaged valves...

You running the correct heat range on the plugs? Looks like the ground terminal is broken on #1. But the ceramic is broken on a few of them. Prolly why the ground is broken on the #1.

Keep in mind this is on a F1-A Procharged hemi that was just getting tuned and the plugs were reused from the last build just for the tuning portion. It ran lean a few times when it was being tuned, that's why I have a forged assembly.

2 steps colder is what's called for when running 16psi of boost so yes, correct heat range. I just regapped the plugs from the previous build so that's probably the cause of the broken ground strap.

That's not broken ground strap. It's a melted strap. Can be common with your setup. Too bad it's not the 6.4 because there is a way to control afr in each cylinder, not sure if we can on the 5.7. If you're not, then you should run 2 wide bands to help tame that bank.

11-11.5 on both banks but I had some high IATs at WOT before I got my water/**** system working properly.

He's got it in an 09 1500 that is far from stock. He has an arrington built tranny behind it I think

Edit: actually an L&M transmission sorry

Correct, a L&M trans.

What kind of vehicle are you putting this badass in, and what trans are you using?

My '09 1500 4.5/6.5 dropped 4wd. At this point there isn't a single system in the truck that hasn't been touched and the only stock part in the drivetrain is now the differentials and the driveshaft and the diffs are getting a new set of gears and a DTT this winter. I've got a L&M built 545rfe behind the engine that's lasted at this point for 3 years through the P1SC, D1SC, and now the F1-A.

I'm already running a wideband on both sides and it's the driver's side that's leaner, which is to be expected. The strap isn't melted, it's actually broken, you can tell by the roughness of the break which is hard to see in the pics. I first thought it melted but after closer inspection it's broken. There's no adjusting a specific cylinder's afr with the 6.1L manifold or pcm as far as I've been able to find. I think I'll be installing an egt probe into the cylinder 1 primary as that's the hot cylinder it seems; it might also be time to ditch the 6.1L manifold and grab a single plane like the drag pack and throw an elbow on it.

My guess is detonation, that is the only thing I have seen break the insulator (usually right before a collapsed/broken piston).

I know you have a good handle on things charonblk07. There's no need for me to second guess from pics what you can see first hand up close. It's just from the pic the strap looks thinner, even at the base, as well as the ones with broken insulators. How much st & Lt knock are you logging? Just curious. But you would know if you're in the danger zone of burning a hole in the piston and there's no way AJ or any tuner would sleep well pushing things that hard on your work. drag Pak for the 426 is really nice, especially with your setup. Should work well with next to little modding.

Bore scope the cylinders!

Might be good to run 1 step colder in those cylinders! Can't hurt anything but the spark plugs.

Sounds incredibly badass. You have to post a video once you get your tune right.

In the old days, they would do oddball things to even out fuel distribution. Like they mounted the Holley 4bbl at a skew on BB chebbies. Or they would weld or otherwise attach little "fences" to the runner or plenum floors to even out fuel distribution. But they had mass access to dynos to figure that stuff out.

I already ran a borescope into the cylinders when I saw the plugs and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary and no scorching on the pistons, can't see the valves though as my scope won't bend tight enough to look up at them. I'm only logging a temporary .5 STK and no LTK so I think I'm alright in that respect, I'll have to ask my tuner if he's altered the knock sensor sensitivity. The plugs are already 2 steps colder if I go any colder and I'll be fouling them after every long drive I think; I'll probably see how these new 3381s are after a thousand kms and I'll know where I'm sitting and if I need to change anything. I have a set of 4 step colder plugs for nitrous but that might be overkill and I'd be fouling them regularly.

Completely irrelevant, but if anyone following this thread enjoys reading about charonblk's beast, read his build thread: http://www.ramforum.com/f17/charonblk07s_build_thread-39221/

Its an enjoyable 260 post thread :favorites13:

Very impressive build. I love the attention to detail with the mechanics, the wiring, everything. Awesome job dude. I can't wait to see what that monster does once you get it tuned up.

Curious, what are you using for a transfer case?
