The way I understand it, to figure your truck's "max tongue weight" (MTW) you would use the following.....
MTW = Payload (of your Truck) - weight in the bed - weight in the truck including passengers.
Once you get a mtw figured out you can use the rule of thumb of 12% of a trailers loaded weight as what it's tongue weight will be and see if it is under or equal to the MTW you calculated for your truck.
