I'm confused by the VIN decoder. It says:

810, 781, 445 lbs 445.0 min 1036.0 max

For dead tongue weight. Should I interpret this as some trucks only having support for 445lbs of tongue weight? Or is 445lbs the minimum recommended tongue weight?

I have a CURT class III receiver that's rated at 600lbs tongue (and bolted to the underside of the truck as well as a bumper bolt) but want to make sure my puny V6 SLT is manly enough to take 525lbs of tongue weight.

Thanks.

Considering the bumper hole is rated for 500 tongue/5000 trailer itself. That Class III receiver is rated for 600 tongue/6000 trailer weight. You would have to look up the specific receiver to find out if it is rated for a WDH and how much.
You'll probably have some squat and if the truck has 3.21 gearing, it will probably take a little cattle prodding to get moving...lol

If you are rated for 600 lbs, then you need to focus on your payload. WHat's your payload rating? If ( after you and everything in your truck like passengers, animals, food, etc , gas ) everything i listed is under your payload rating, and your left with more than 600 pounds, then you will be more than fine.

For instance, say my GVWR is 9000 and my truck weighs 6000 with everything I want inside of it, then my effective payload is 3k pounds. I could ( with the right hitch ) have a tongue weight that would be up to 3k pounds. Granted, you won't find a hitch / trailer combo liket hat, I used fake numbers. Though, it should give you a generalized idea of how to do the math. Witha class three you're merely limited by the 600lbs on the tongue, but your truck still has to be able to support it with the available payload.

If it's the curt 13333 hitch its 600 hitch 6000 trailer weight and with a weight distribution hitch its 1000 hitch weight and 10k trailer weight. And you'll be fine at 525 lbs hitch weight.

Edit most 1500s have payloads between 900-1700

900 being loaded 4wd limited and 1700 being a 2wd base. Being a v6 slt your payload will be in the 14-1500 if I was guessing. The tire pressure sticker on your driver's side door jamb will give you the right number.

.

My payload is 350lbs for passengers (3) and 100lbs of stuff (another 400lbs of stuff in the trailer, just the BBQ in the back of the truck forward of the rear axle).

It is indeed the CURT 13333 -- good guess. I'm not going to be using a WDH as it doesn't seem necessary.

According to the nice little RAM chart (https://www.ramtruck.ca/buildandprice/en/assets/pdf/en/2016Ram1500_towing.pdf), I'm at 1710 as the Pentastar is lighter than the HEMI and I'm a quad cab rather than a crew cab.

I'm a little bit more confident in my little trucks abilities now.

Thanks, guys! :)
