I just upgraded to a 2020 Ram 3500 Laramie 4x4 8' box and would love some clarification on towing terms. According to my sticker here are the stats:
GVWR: 12,300
GAWR Front: 6,000
GAWR Rear: 7,000
Payload: 4,213
Implied vehicle weight based on #s: 8,087
I was really surprised that nowhere on the vehicle does it show Max Towing Capacity or even GCWR.
According to the online RAM website, using my VIN, my max payload is 4,212 and max towing is 19,930.
1. Does the Max Tow Capacity seems right? Reason I ask is they don't have the correct payload, which puts into doubt how they come up with these numbers and how specific they are to my model/ 4212 vs 4213 payload... Not big difference, but it's either right or not and since some 5th wheels are 20k GVWR while the website gives me 19,930... a small difference could be the difference between legal or not. (although I'm not looking for a 20k one anyways)
I know that most people wouldn't recommend exceeding Max tow capacity numbers and I don't have plans on carrying anything over 20k... But I do want to know more for curiosities sake. I see alot of people saying that what ACTUALLY matters is not exceeding axle rating and tire rating, and that is why they don't even include max tow capacity and things like that on the stickers. Some questions about that.
2. Are the axle ratings referring to the GAWR's?
3. I know the only way to know weights for sure is getting the car weighed, which I will eventually. However what is the estimated percent of the weight that falls onto the rear axle on an 8ft bed? Reason I ask, is that I am guessing the process to figure out how much trailer I could carry would be to subtract that number from 7,000 and that is the pay pin weight of the 5th wheel/trailer I could carry.
Thanks!
