Sure is a lotta halftons towing with 3:21’s in this thread.... wouldn’t the 3:92’s fair better?

My 3.21s do just fine towing. I preferred them because I commute 140mi a day. I get good milage towing and commuting

what floyd said is about right!

Not necessarily. I don’t know about my new truck, a 2018 Hemi CC short box 4x4 since the only time so far that I’ve pulled something heavy behind it was just less than 20 miles, but my 2008 Hemi 4x4 short box QC that averaged between 12-13 around town, still averaged about 9.5 to 11mpg when I pulled a fully loaded 6x12 U-Haul enclosed trailer on a 700 mile trip... and that was even pulling it much faster than the 55mph they “recommend” you pull it at.

Mine has the 3:92’s and if I keep my foot out of it and drive it a lot more like a normal person; I may not be able to get as good of fuel mileage as yours does empty but, it’s not too far behind. If I drove a heck of a lot more highway miles and not near so many city miles, I could average real close to 18. But that’s all my truck knows, is really short, city-mile trips as my work is only less than 5 minutes away from my home and for the most part my truck hardly ever sees any real highway miles. Are usually only average about 14 miles per gallon every couple weeks when I have to go get fuel.

This is common place for my truck. Granted if I was that worried about it I wouldn't have a truck as a dd since I have a office job. but the difference between 18-20 mpg and my normal 24-26ish adds up quick at 2 tanks a week. 20190509_070535.jpeg

Yup, mileage gets worse. I've got a 2013 4.7 3.55 pulling a 4000 lb boxy RV trailer up here in British Columbia. On the flats it is about 20% worse, and climbing the mountain passes it can be 50%. I do get some relief on the ascending side of the passes :)
I'd give some real numbers but we are all liters/100 kM and kilogram weights, I'm too lazy to convert it all.

8.5 or so towing. 65MPH thruway speed, no faster. As fast as I'd want to go anyway pulling my camper. Better going out, worse coming back. Some long hill pulls on the way back and into the wind.

On the highway in the 65mph range I get 26MPG. Last fall I went to Hershey and back from northern NJ that included driving to the hotel and local roads. My MPG for the whole trip was 23.

I have a 18 Express quad cab, 6.4' bed, 20" wheels, 5.7l, 8 speed and 3.21 rear. I left the MDS on as well.

When I did the same trip this spring with MDS off based on this group I was lucky to get 18MPG.

Is this actual mileage or lie-o-meter?

Dennis ,
Most likely you got 3.21 gear ,they grate for HWY drive light load.
Towing normally like lower gear like 4.10
Or in the 1/2 ton 3.92,
Lower pull better so get little better MPG
As you pull ,
but empty not so.
Set gears cost about $1800 for 2WD
An $2600 for 4WD.
But if you’re so towing 3-4 times year ,just drive it ,

I had a 2017 1500 and pulled a starcraft AR one to yellowstone from florida the trailer was 22 feet, the truck had a 3.6 pennstar with an 8sp trans and 3.21 gears averaged 14.1.My 2018 1500 bighorn 5.7 v8 with 8sptrans and 3.92 gears average 13.9 not much difference I ran the same sp between 60 to 65 mph.

I pulled a 26
I pull a 24/27' regularly with my '18 1500 CC 5.7 Outdoorsman 4X4 with Airlift 1000HD bags. 2 of us with (4) 40lb dogs, 3000w genny, 112 litres spare fuel and too much extra cargo.
No problems and not too worried about mpg driving 60 and under without rocketman acceleration and anticipating slowdowns and stops well ahead of time.

Nope. I was following him when he was towing the trailer. Went the speed limit the whole way. It was about 90% highway on PA turnpike (I-76)
Just for info...what was the speed limit?

I have pulled a best of 30.3 on a 60 mi trip lol following a semi @ 60mph. Now that is probably absolutely perfect conditions and wouldnt be maintainable but the hemi with 3.21s is capable of impressive mpg.

I know we can be using water, the damn government won't allow it we could be using steam to power us up! I get 12.4 in city screw highway anyone should be getting at least 20 on the highway without towing. If your towing this should even be talked about. Our gas mileage sucks with these trucks. You would think by now 2020 they could make the Hemi the motor that everyone wants, I am not even sure if the Diseal guys are doing any better!
