Good Morning,

I just bought a 2014 Ram 3500 Mega Cab it has a GVWR of 12500 and a GCWR of 25000. I went with the 3500 to ensure that i can tow safetly on the road.

I am in need of a trailer to haul my ATV and then to use when i move from the west coast to the east coast for my military PCS move. Im looking at a Gooseneck triple axle rated at 15600 GVWR, will i need a CDl for this setup. I am finding mixed logic on this. I will not be using the trailer for any type of buissness transactions.

Does the 26000 limit is it determined by the GVWR of the truck plus the GVWR of the trailed added together?

The payload of the truck will be mostly be the hitch weight of trailer.
Im figuring the truck weight plus all weight in trailer will be arround 23,000 lbs fully loaded with everything.

Thank you for advice in advance.

If you aren't using it commercially, you do not need a CDL if the combined vehicle weight is under 26,000lbs.

A driver is required to obtain a CDL to operate any of the following vehicles:

##A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 pounds;

##A combination of vehicles with a combined GVW of more than 26,000 pounds; with a trailer of more than 10,000 pounds GVW

##A vehicle designed to transport 16 or more people including the driver;

##Any size vehicle that requires hazardous materials placards; or

##Any size vehicle outwardly equipped and identified as a school bus.

Check the laws yourself.........the one that will get you if the 10,000 lb rated trailer. Some states say is the trailer is 10k rated or more, the 26k limit don't matter and you need a cdl.

I had to register my 97 3500 dually with the trailer weights on it, and mine was for 25k even, and the trailer was rated 14,400. I also had some magnetic signs made that said "PERSONAL USE ONLY NOT FOR HIRE" that I put on when I was towing it.

Still have those signs if interested.....white with black letters

This is the law here in NC too. I was thinking that this was being adopted in all 50 states but maybe not..
