Im on a bit of a budget and i'm looking for the cheapest train horn set up i can find. I'm fairly good with my hands so i can put it all in myself i just need to know what parts will go with each other. I know i need the horns, a compressor, and a tank but i heard that some people have setups that dont need a tank just a compressor that go straight to the horns. Also i would prefer a switch to go from the normal horn to the train horns. thanks guys

i have the hornblasters train horn. love it.

dont see how you could have a compressor and not an air tank. would fill just the hose up with air, and would maybe be able to honk for half a second. though there are guys who dont run compressors. they will just run the tanks, only problem with that is you have to refill the tank some how. ie gas station air pump.

you will also a need a solenoid. this will stop the air before the horns and then once it gets power itll open and allow the air to pass through the horns.

i have a switch wired up to the solenoid itself which keeps the regular car horn separate from the train horns.

the whole unit goes in this order
compressor>tank>hoses>solenoid(which has a switch in the cab to activate)> horns

Thanks guys, i appreciate it. I asked my uncle (mechanic) and he said that the setups with no tank are not as loud as the the others because they have to put the air straight through the horn which means less build up. i found a couple kits on ebay that are like 150 bucks and have everything i need.

Do not trust E-Bay kits. Most times they will not work or what you get is not as advertised. Go to the place I linked and get something that is from a company that backs their products. Not some fly-by-night operation that may or may not be there tomorrow. A little more money spent now means that you will not have to spend more later replacing cheap crap you bought first.
