trans in cold temp

When towing with my 14 ram 1500 the trans runs 10 degrees warmer in 40 degrees weather than in 80 degrees weather? Is that normal. Doesn't make sense to me.

The 8 speeds are designed to run warmer than the older 6 speeds from what I've read.

The 8 speed actually has a heater in the trans because it runs too cool sometimes, this would explain the running hotter in the cooler temps because the heater will be active.

I found out about the tranny heater because mine was leaking from the moment I drove it off of the dealer's lot. I'm not sure the temperatures that induce the heater to kick on.

This is true. My 6 speed stayed around 120-130 degrees on the highway. My 8 speed hovers around 180.

What is the typical range for the 8 speed transmission? I have seen temps of 193 and that is not towing anything.

I believe the 8spd tranny has a heater in it as well to heat the tranny fluid to a the best temp given the engine load, driving style and outside temp.
