I just bought a 1997 Ram 1500 5.2L Laramie SLT 4x4. After reading in the owner's manual, I learned it has a 46RE transmission. The truck only has 89,000 miles and is in excellent condition. The previous owner told me it had issues when going from reverse back to drive. I was told it would not shift gears unless the gas pedal is bumped twice and then it would be just fine. (I have not been able to get it to go back to normal after pumping the gas pedal) Now if the truck is in park and is shifted directly in drive, everything shifts normally. The previous owner told me he took it to a transmission guy and he was told it was a "plastic internal" part that broke and the transmission would need to be dropped to get it fixed, however it is nothing that effects the transmission's performance. I checked the gearshift linkage adjustment and everything was tight and looked as it should. I am curious what could be wrong and if I do have to drop the tranny, is it possible without a lift? Also what is a good rebuild kit? Thanks!
