Hey everyone, looking for some advice on my 1998 Ram 4x4 5.9L before I tear into it any further. About a month ago I started having some transmission issues and it threw a code for the governor solenoid. I replaced the governor solenoid and did a fluid and filter change, and after that the truck drove great for a few days. Around town it felt completely normal. The problem showed up once I got on the highway, after a few minutes of cruising, overdrive would drop out, the OD Off light would come on, and shortly after I’d get a Trans Hot warning. I pulled over and let it cool and didn’t drive it while hot.

I pulled codes and got P0740 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit/Open). After reading around, I decided to replace the TCC solenoid and changed the fluid again while I was in there. Same thing though, it drives fine in city driving, but after some time at highway speed the code comes back and overdrive gets disabled again. Other than that, I haven’t noticed anything strange. Shifts feel normal, no grinding or hanging between gears, and there was no metal in the pan either time I dropped it. The issue really only shows up once it’s warmed up and been cruising on the highway for a bit.

I’m not against dropping the transmission to replace the torque converter or even the trans itself if that’s where this is headed, but I’d like to get a better idea of what’s actually failing first. Does this sound more like a bad torque converter clutch, a wiring or connector issue, valve body problem, or something internal that only shows up under heat and load? Any tests or things I should check before pulling the trans would be appreciated.
