Hey all, I’m attempting to do a transmission service on my 14 with the 8 speed. I stripped the s**t out of the bolt that sits above the crossover exhaust pipe. I’ve tried everything and can’t get it. Anyone have any tips other than dropping my exhaust?

Thanks

Penetrating oil & heat.

Vise grips as tight as you can get them. Even better yet, if you have a welder you can weld a nut to the top.

Make sure you are using 6 point sockets, 12pt are great....for stripping heads.

DITTO ALL Above Post #2. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Just watch that heat especially if you have leaking fluid.

Drill hole and use easy out set.

You can also as an alternative try a nut splitter if none of the other above works, but considering you are talking the head of a bolt, prob not work.. Last ditch only.

Get an extra long drill bits, and drill straight through both sides of the exhaust to get to the bolt. :D Then weld the holes shut when you're done....LOL. Just kidding of course.

Seriously though...is it broke flush to the tranny? If the pan were removed, would there be any protruding from the hole? Even if there isn't one trick would be to get a nut that fits over..and even one size larger than the stud, cut the nut in half (so it's thinner), then weld the stud to the inside of the nut. Start from the center and work out. It works. I've done it a number of times in low-access situations like yours. If you don't have a wire-feed welder, or not if you can even get the welder nozzle in there good enough. If not, then yeah take off the exhaust, unfortunately.

Hey, I had a buddy drop a nut down the carb of his classic car... couldn't find it on a magnet. Had to pull off the intake. Just as he was getting ready to leave with his buddies for the big classic car show of the year (3hrs away).. ha ha. Ya hate when that stuff happens.

Bolt is still in, not broken. Just rounded off in the inside and cant get anything to grab it. All the other bolts came out with relative ease, however, this one is a pain.

Aren't the tranny bolts Allen head? I don't know of a 12 point Allen head...

Ok, sorry I missed that it was rounded.

Sometimes the next larger size can't be hammered in, and an SAE one won't work either. Then you can file (or carefully grind) the 'flats' of a larger one down just enough to be like a 5.5mm (for example) and be forced into ...and get the cap screw out.

I have a vehicle with a brake caliper pin I had to do that with.

Consider giving that a try. Good luck

I'm not there but is the OP using a 6-sided socket? Also, some sockets are tapered on the end and some are quite tapered where the actual 'lands' in the socket are up inside further than some others. Get a socket and grind the end flush...so the entire 6-sided socket 'lands' can contact the full height of the hex.

Can you get a vise grips in there??

Well...OP. Did you get the bolt out?
Unfortunately I didn't. Not sure why this bolt is so tight, I know the exhaust is right beside it. Don't have a welder to get a bolt on there and try to get it off. Vice grips grabbed it well but just slipped off and still didn't move it.

Take long thick steel rod. Put it on the head of the "stripped (head) bolt. Rap it sharply several times with a hammer. Repeat several times if necessary. I never have that fail unless the true problem was cross threading or corrosion.

Before you screw it up to the point you can't get it out,why not drop the exhaust,it's not hard to remove the midpipe.

Welp here is what i would do if i couldnt get the bolt out is it questionable? HELL YES!. But you have to replace the pan any ways since it is the filter and its plastic be careful and break the pan around the bolt and use vice grips.

Had the same problem when servicing mine. I took a grinder and ground head off. When I dropped pan enough was sticking out to grab with vice grips. But much to my surprise, it was only finger tight after tension released from removing pan. Bot new bolt at local bolt supply. FYI, OEM bolt seemed to be hardened and would not drill easily, that when grinder came out

Loose the transmission mount bolts and carefully jack the tail of transmission so you can get more clearance and access to the bolt.
IMO, I always remove the trickier fasteners first then the easy ones.
You can test a different Torx bit and/or, depending how badly it’s tore up, yet an Allen bit. Then move on to vise grips, then the welder idea. Good luck.

The exhaust still goes up when you jack the tranny up off the mount,so you don't gain a hell'va lot more clearance by jacking the tranny up,unless you unbolt the exhaust at the manifolds, and if you're doing that, you might as well pull the midpipe off the manifolds
