Just bought this truck from an elderly neighbor. It's an '08 1500 5.7 ST w/tow package and only 10k miles.
It makes a peculiar sound under certain conditions and I'm wondering if you guys may have some insight.
He bought it new, used it for pulling a camper to a park < 100 miles away a few times, then suffered a stroke. The remaining 7500 miles were put on by his adult children using it for various things, including two road trips from TX to KS.
He has religiously started and warmed it up a few times a month in the garage, but not driven it. I know it hasn't seen over 100 miles in the past 12 months.
On to the sound/potential problem...
Does not happen when cold.
After driven enough to warm up and the truck is shut down then restarted, when shifting into reverse, there's a +/- 1 second sound, somewhere between clicking and grinding, then the gear engages (almost like a clutch isn't fully engaged).
It will do it over and over, until you move, then won't happen again until the truck is shut down and restarted.
Fluid level is good. Fluid looks clean and smells normal.
The only services performed have been oil changes, but those were done regularly.
Ideas? Suggestions? Should I be worried, take it to the shop, or just drive it like I stole it?
Thanks,
B
