Hi everyone,
My 2011 Ram 2500 HD with the 5.7 engine is slipping in 4th gear and slightly in 3rd as well, both when cold and hot. The issue hasn’t changed after a year of driving. It happens going uphill, downhill, and on flat roads.
However, when I press the gas more, the RPMs don’t spike much—maybe just around 500 RPM higher—and the truck accelerates without any obvious slipping. Still, it feels like 4th gear just isn’t engaging properly.
5th gear shifts in a bit hesitantly but holds fine without slipping. The truck has high mileage, around 320,000 km (200,000 miles), but there are no metal shavings in the transmission fluid. The issue hasn’t gotten worse over time.
When engine braking downhill, there’s no slipping. Also, if I manually select 4th gear and step on the gas, it feels like 4th gets locked in and there’s no slipping either.
Could someone help me figure out what this might be? Could it be the solenoid? Valve body? Or is it time for a rebuild?
Thanks a lot for any info!
