I have a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 regular cab with factory 20" wheels (275/65 r20 tires). My truck's engine is bone stock. That being said I recently smoked my 545rfe "6 speed" transmission. 21, 000 miles. Its at the dealership now waiting to be looked at & hopefully fixed. My question is what can I do to prevent future failure? Torque converter? Sonnax line booster? Lower gears? Or is swapping in a built tranny after my warranty is up my best bet? I haul firewood several times a week. Both in the bed and with a trailer. I have air helpers inaide the rear coil springsand heavier strusts on the front. It pulls great, I never had an issue until 3rd gear started slipping. Yesterday I drove it 30 miles to the dealership on solid ice in limp mode.

Dropping from overdrive to 3rd gear while passing has been known to roast those clutch packs.

Don't floor it passing specially with a loaded truck, thats about it. Just easy acceleration.

Valve Body Upgrade might help. Driving in tow haul too will definitely help, that is what it is for, do you use that when you have a load? I use it all the time, I don't think there is any downside to TH. We basically have the same truck, 4x4 reg cab hemi with the 6 speed.

Acceleration from a dead stop is better than going from a roll.

Mine is headed up to the dealer today for trans and rear axle issues....

I normally turn tow haul on. Is there a way to get it to automatically come on every time I start my truck?

Yeah, pay for a tuner, lol. If you find any other way let me know. Only time you don't want it on is high speeds.

I had a diablo trinity. I didnt like the way it acted. Sold it to a buddy.

Yeah I here ya, I love my truck but the weakest part is the dodge tranny, always has been. I have a 2010 so I will have to worry about it before you do. I hear they are getting better though. I wonder if anyone has put an Allison in a 1500. Or you can always go with a stick next time. I had a Cummins with a stick, was great only my knee gave out from the shifting. Old age has not been kind to this body.

Do any of you guys run the sonnax pressure kits ona 2012? Or is that a bad idea? I've been lurking these forums for over a year and I finally decided to make an account. I just havent been able to find much information about the 2012's

My brother in law went through 3 dodge auto transmissions in his landscaping business. When he traded it he went with a stick, and hasn't had a problem since that I know of. Both were cummins 2500's. Something to consider for next time I guess. As long as your in warranty I wouldn't do anything, soon as your out go get some upgrades.

Thats a nice looking truck, I really like the bumber. Just some advice a dodge trans tech gave me when I used to work in the industry. Anytime you get more than a couple hundred lbs put it into t/h, this makes me think that line pressure is just way to low in stock form or really really weak friction meterial.

I was looking at stage 2 transmissions from the place in Dallas, the MGH? Ones... I know a lot of the supercharged guys have those. I know a local guy who has a stage 3 transmission in a supercharged 2009. He loves it. But the price tag is a bit hefty

Definitely going to make sure t/h is on from now on. Dad warned me about that, (Oklahoma, everyones in the oilfield but me) he blew out his 3500's auto a few times. The local teansmissikn shop told me a sonnax pressure booster would help, but I was afraid to get one without knowing for sure.

MGH/L&M is in Delaware I believe, close to HHP. That's what I have on order and several other boosted 4th gens are already running.
