So stupid question thread. All I can find out about a tri coat paint is that there is a different color base used and that it's one of those vehicles that looks like it changes colors as you go by it. Am i understanding this correct, or is there more to it?
The basis of my question is that I'm having a custom fiver built and I want to match the pin stripping on the fiver with my truck and the manufacturer said they can do any oem paint code for free unless its a pearl or tri coat then there's a big up charge, so I'm trying to figure out if there will be any surprises that I I'm not knowledged in.

Tri-coat is a primer, color, (red, black, white, etc.) a pearl coat and then clearcoat. I use it in a spray-can (touch up shop) to paint black badges a Side badge-hood.jpg body color for a little less bling on my limited.

That badge looks sweet.
Im trying to figure out two different colors

20 ram BILLET SILVER METALLIC. PSC
late teens ford f series RUBY RED . RR

Both would be oem from the factory as they are. I haven't found anything that said that billet is a tri coat but I keep reading lots of conflicting info about the rr. Some say its a tri coat and some say no.

No, I know the billet is not tri color or 3 stage as they say, but when I research RR ruby red the ford color, some sites say its tri color or 3 stage and then some sites say its just regular paint. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
1: if RR rugby red in ford is a regular

Ruby red is very similiar to Delmonico Red and yes it is a 3 stage, 3 step, or pearlescent color ... but Fords Ruby Red is actually an iridescent 3 stage paint which is why it changes colors at different angles ... the ground or base coat is a metallic then the 2nd coat is a candy coat that is very transparent almost like a tint ... then they throw on the clear ....

Ram's Delmonico red also changes colors depending on the light unlike Fords ...

So no ... Ruby Red is not a regular

Great info
Do you have any idea how much more can a new vehicle cost because it had tri coat instead of regular paint

So I know its been awhile since I posted on here but I signed the paperwork to go ahead and start my custom fiver build, now it's a 6 month wait. Anyway, originally they told me all full body paint was free as long as it was an oem color that was not a pearl or tri coat, then it would be a big up charge, as one would imagine on a 48' th. Everyone seems to believe that rr ford ruby red is a tri coat or 3 stage paint. When i told the rv factory that I wanted my primary color to be rr ford ruby red and my minimal graphics in Psc ram billet silver metallic. They said no problem both those colors are free because there oem and neither is a pearl or tri coat. I specifically had them triple check that the red wasn't something else like rapid or race red. It's like I'm begging for them to charge me thousands more, I just want the right red. They have it perfectly correct on my build sheet as rr ruby red ford 2011-2018 and there not charging me any extra because there saying it's not a tri coat.
Should I be concerned its not going to be that rr ruby red that looks like it's changing colors in the light or darkness or as you walk by in different lighting? Or since the rv factory has a high end third party coach paint company do all there work, should I expect a phone call once it goes into the paint booth that there is going to be a major up charge because rr is a tri coat?

forgive my ignorance, but I have no idea what a custom fiver is. I'm assuming it's a 5th wheel travel trailer? If so, iridescent paints work best on contoured surfaces. I'm not sure how much of that effect you'll see on a flat surface like a TT. It might not be worth the extra money if they end up charging you more. But I'm no paint expert, and I'm just going by what I've observed.

I take offense to it being a tt, lol hahaha. Its a custom built high end fifth wheel built like a house, not your average tt. Prices can go over $200k. I've got confidence in the company, this is what they do for a living. They use all oem colors and all Paint Jobs Include: Full body paint with 2 clear coats & wet sand and buff in between, no decals, slide-out sides painted . I just don't understand how there can be 50/50 split opinions on my primary color choice of the rig, rr ford ruby red. The company and some others have said it's not a tri coat 3 stage but several have insisted that it is. The company has used rr on 1 other rig before back in 2019 and they said it was not a pearl or tri coat 3 stage. That paint job came ot amazing. Its just one of those things that makes you say hmmmmmmmm , how can it be both ways. Heres a pic of that 2019 rig in the sun and shadeScreenshot_20210213-185450.png Screenshot_20210313-174644.png

First thought that came to mind was that it reminds me of a coke can. Sorry, I couldn't resist that. I'm sure they are very nice tt's. And I'd be lying if I said I'm not a little envious of you for getting one. Hope your paint selection works out for you. :favorites13:

Im not insulted by the coke can jab, but now calling it a tt is a punch to the gutlol.
Funny side note. My wife absolutely is a coke zero junkie and me a d coke junkie. So were considering contacting coke for one of there advertisement wraps , for a little side hustle, .
They have really fancy paint schemes but we just like the classic. Screenshot_20210118-211925.png

Love the tri-coat pearl. Haven't had any problems with it, and have painted several accessories and trim pieces with it from Touch Up Direct. 20210311_175131.jpg20210310_153756.jpg20210114_112342.jpg20210311_175116.jpg
