Hi all,
I just bought a 98 ram with the 5.2 and 5 spd and am having an issue. When coming to a stop or making a slow turn the truck just dies. It only happens at low speed or slowing down. For example...driving in 3rd and shift into neutral and coast to a stop the truck just turns off. No issue restarting though it fires right back up. No problem with acceleration or while at speed. In addition no problem while parked. I put it in neutral while parked and turned the wheel and no problem nor did idle drop.
Any suggestions? It did come with a K&N cold air intake kit installed....not sure if that can cause issues

Thanks

I think it has something to do with your idler arm. My buddies old ford did the same thing and it took like 10 minutes to fix. I'm no mechanic though.

You have a bad CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) located on right (passengers) side of the bell housing.

I know this because my 99 was doing the same thing. Minus the turning like your talking about. I don't think your issue has much to do with turning with the exception of what rpm's the truck is running at while turning. I bet your truck wouldn't stall on you if you would make a turn above idle rpm's. My truck would just shut down at warm idle rps's (650-800).

My truck didn't throw a code for this so I started replacing the easiest parts 1st, starting at the throttle body. First I removed the throttle body (with all 3 sensors/valve removed) and gave it a good cleaning as it really needed it. I thought that would fix it but no luck. The I replaced the IAC (Idle Air Control Valve) and nothing. Then I did the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and no luck. Next it was the MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) and again no luck. All are on the throttle body. I even did the PCV Valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) and nothing. All along I suspected it was in fact the CPS but waited to last just because of the difficulty of getting to it. THIS FIXED IT!

The CPS can only be seen from the underside of the engine and can only be removed/replaced from the top side. Unless you remove your exhaust manifold and I would recommend this. You will see it just above the oil filter. You will have to remove your air intake box above the throttle body and reach down from above the distributor cap. This would be a good time to remove the throttle body to clean it as this will only give you more room to work. If you do make sure you cover the open holes on the engine so nothing falls in. Removing/replacing is all done by feel since you can't see it from the top. Luckily its just two bolts and a quick snap of a harness. Good luck!
