Wanted to see if anyone else experiences the following:
I live in Chicago suburbs and when it’s real cold out (below zero with wind chill this morning) my truck starts then makes a sound like sounds like a percolating tea kettle whistling. Happens for about a min then stops or stops when I put truck in gear (forward or reverse). Any thoughts? Should I be concerned?

I’ve done a little reading on forums and some describe some instances that may be similar and seem to feel it’s power steering pump or something in cold.

Thoughts or experiences would be welcomed. Thanks.

Sorry didn’t get video today of sound

My V6 does the same thing when it’s super cold outside... gives a little “whistle” when I first start it.

i have noise for 3-5 sec only when outside temp is around or below freezing.alot of people are saying its normal but i refuse to accept that.i have had many vehicles over the years ,some were real pieces of **** and i have never experienced it before.to me it sounds like power steering but by the time i start my truck and get out there to listen with my scope its gone .i also tend to believe its p/s because when its cold and i hear the noise my steering is a little sticky.i have heard it is air getting in the system on the low pressure side, possibly the o ring going into the rack.i am planning on starting my truck w/o serp. belt to make sure it is power steering related or at least acc. drive related and if so i will replace the p/s low pressure lines.rack to cooler and cooler to res..it sure sounds to me like air in p/s or maybe the pump starving for fluid possibly because the fluid is thick when cold and having a hard time getting through the screen filter in res. or maybe a slightly clogged screen.i have been trying to get to the bottom of this for some time.if you figure it out please post something as i will do the same .good luck

Can you capture a vid?

Not piston slap?

Fluids are 1,000 times thicker in the cold, metals are at their tightest when cold, all kinds of sounds will happen. If you believe it to be power steering, I'd see about insulation it somehow.

See how thick 30 weight oil is when cold, up to 11,000 plus, but at operating temps it is 11. Almost exactly 1,000 time thicker. That isn't 1,000 percent thicker, that is only ten times thicker, but 100 times thicker then that.

You could also try pao based power steering fluid. Look at stat sheets and find the best performing power steering fluids.

Amsoil has a little better numbers for cold then redline, redline is better at hot operation. Amsoil has some incredible cold properties with this product, check compatibility. Probably 1/2 as thick as what you have now in the freezing temps.

i have never had this problem in any of my cars or trucks ive had.this is my first dodge.this will do it around 32 deg. or lower and ive started vehicles in alot colder temps than that without this noise which is leading me to believe i am getting air in the system for a sec, or two until the o ring or hose connection seats.i hear there was a tsb for this very same problem on acuras, bad o ring.i am waiting for it to warm up a bit,6 degrees right now,i do not have use of a garage.i am thinking about changing all low pressure lines.i am just trying to educate myself with some feedback before i make a move.appreciate the reply.also this will only make the noise first cold start.i can start it 20 times again that day no matter how cold it is and it wont make the noise.

My 05 had "no power steering" when it was very cold , say +5 F and below. It would free up about the time I backed out of my short driveway and into the street. Don't recall any noise other than typical cold engine/belt sounds.
This was without any engine warm up, just turn the key and into reverse.
On those rare occasions that I let it warm up, no issue.

Guys if he has a Rebel its 2015+ and has electric power steering. Sounds like he's describing the whining noise our trucks can make in the winter and its generally considered normal.

It's probably the fan clutch on start up, they can sometimes make noise when cold and the viscous fluid in them is starting to move

Haha! Too funny!
All those posts about power steering, oil weight, what’s a better oil for cold temps and he has electric power steering!!!!

Don’t the newer Rams have a electric fan? No fan clutch?

Mine does not have an electric fan. I have not done the e-fan replacement as I’m not tuned.

Thanks. That could be it. Today it didn’t make the tea kettle noise but seemed like the fan was making a little noise and soft squeak as I walked around it.

The Gen5 trucks use an electric cooling fan. The Gen4 EcoD uses one also, the Gen5 Hemi uses the same 850 watt size
