So I have had the steering failure light of death off (mostly) and on (now wont go away) for the last 6 months. However I was never able to pull a code before because the system always magically reset. Well today was the magic day the light just wont go away and I pulled the code U2012.

I have already purchased a new rack and pinion module because originally all signs pointed to that being the problem. Just waiting on that wonderful backlog to clear for it to ship to me and install. However, now I am more confused with this fault. I pulled the electrical connections and cleaned them. I followed the wiring up and everything looks good. Pulled associated fuses in the TPIM and no issues there. Is the electric motor possibly shot on the rack and pinion or is the fault possibly elsewhere?

Anyone have any advice on what else I should check/troubleshoot?

Did you buy just a module or the whole rack and pinion assembly?

Whole rack and pinion assembly as the electric module on the r&p isn't available by itself.
Thats what I figured, but wasn't sure if there was something new that just became available.

By definition of the fault code you have there is a problem with the steering column module which is different from the module in the steering rack.
Are you having problems with buttons not working on the steering wheel?

Negative. I had the SCCM replaced a couple years ago because I had the air bag light. I had thought this might be a possibility but I have checked all the other functionality of the switches on the steering wheel and they are all working.

Usually the issue is something in the steering module, which is built into the steering rack. Most likely the rack needs replaced.
