Hello to our Ram Brand enthusiasts,

Our teams have heard your concerns and will be posting out periodically in an effort to provide you with new update releases and ask for feedback on how to better serve all of you. We appreciate your patience and feedback throughout the experience!

We're happy to share that as of this morning (December 9th, 2021), TSB 08-180-21 was released as an informational bulletin regarding the latest Flash Over The Air (FOTA) software update. Uconnect sends Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA) updates to vehicles equipped with built-in cellular modems within range of U.S. or Canadian cellular networks, in an effort to add new features or fix bugs. For your convenience, we've included a snippet of the TSB and the symptoms/conditions that it intends to address, below. *Please note the applicable vehicle build dates and sales codes.

TSB 08-180-21.pngTSB 08-180-21 SYMPTOMS.png

FOTA Tips
  • Have access to good cellular coverage
  • Enable a Key Off Power Off Delay in your Uconnect 5 system settings to allow the radio time to search the cloud for updates, once your ignition is cycled off
  • Schedule your FOTA for the evening when you're less likely to be utilizing your vehicle and it's connected services.
After FOTA is Completed
  • Wait about 40 minutes with their vehicle OFF (and with key fobs away from vehicle) to allow the radio to enter a "deep sleep" mode. This will mitigate the chances of any interruptions during the download process.
  • App-Over-The-Air (AOTA) will trigger, which refreshes internal radio apps. As your radio syncs with the cloud during this AOTA update time, your connected services and apps may work intermittently, and may take up to 24-48 hours to return to full functionality.
    • Some of these services include your WiFi hotspot, remote demands through the Ram App, etc.
  • You may have to re-pair your phones, reset your radio station presets, or delete & re-pair your Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connection

You can find more helpful resources by visiting our Twitter pages at @UconnectCares Twitter & @RamCares Twitter .
If you're not sure if you've received the latest software update, there are 2 ways to find your current Uconnect 5 software information:
  • VEHICLE option from App Drawer --> Settings --> System Information --> Version Information
OR
  • APP option from App Drawer --> Settings --> Version Information
Please keep an eye out for this communication and do not hesitate to send our team a private message if you have any questions or concerns! If you would prefer to speak to a Ram Customer Care Specialist directly, please call 1-866-932-3878.

Thanks,

Ram Cares

So it only affects the 2022 ram 1500? Because I have a 2019, the new style.

This thread of FOTA updates will pertain only to the Uconnect 5 radios. However, we can absolutely look into whatever concerns you're having with your 2019 Ram Brand truck. Just send us a private message with your VIN and additional details/documentation so we can get a better understanding of your situation.

Not affecting my 2018, but thanks to RamCares for the transparency of this.
We appreciate the feedback! We're doing our best to keep our customers more updated. It sounds like you might be experiencing concerns with your 2018? I'd be happy to look into your VIN, as well, if you'd like me to check for potential updates! Send us a private message if you're interested.

Thanks,

Courtney

Hello everyone,

We will continue to update this Uconnect 5 FOTA thread with the most up to the date software level and release date. We've heard your concerns and are happy to share that the national launch for our latest Flash Over The Air (FOTA) update began this morning (12/22/21)! For your convenience, I've included a snippet of the informational TSB 08-190-21 and the symptoms/conditions that it intends to address. With this FOTA, your Uconnect 5 systems will be brought up to a software level of S21D.5.

TSB 08-190-21.png

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Customers may experience one or more of the following--
  • Apple CarPlay Concerns
  • Black Screen
  • Loud buzzing noise followed by radio reboot
  • Unable to switch between media sources while playing SXM
  • Radio shows screen off when comfort popup appears
  • Phone won't reconnect when connection is lost
  • Delete device in settings menu doesn't work
  • App pages have black background
  • Radio does not fall asleep with ignition off
  • Radio is unresponsive
  • CarPlay will not connect
We appreciate your patience as the FOTA may take some time to reach your vehicle. In the meantime, if you are experiencing concerns with your Uconnect system, we kindly recommend performing a soft reset of your system. If anyone has specific questions or concerns, please feel free to send us a private message or reach out to our @UconnectCares team on Twitter.

Thanks,

Ram Cares

Thank you for posting the update!

I just received the build list on my 3500 Limited this morning. Hopefully, this update will be applied during the production on it.

Another nearly useless post from Ram Cares.

Almost no one has a 2022 Ram here - yet they're boasting about taking care of complaints and problems from the newest released 2022 model.

What about all the complaints from the owners of the '19, '20 & '21 models ???

Again Courtney and Ram Cares ... YOU DON'T CARE.

The Social Engagement Team doesn't have solutions for our questions and the time we spend waiting for someone to either get on the phone or get back to us is forever! Where's the answers to all the problems reported that the Team doesn't have answers for yet remain a "DRIVING DISTRACTION AND SAFETY HAZARD" to the driver?

Where
Are
Those
Fixes
???

Many of our members have ordered/received their 2022 trucks. @RamCares has certainly helped many of our members in a variety of ways. Clearly you have an issue that they were unable to resolve, but it sounds like you probably had an axe to grind.

Your post is not in any way helpful or informative.

I, for one, would have appreciated a notification like this for the atrocious FOTA that destroyed the sound in my 2018 UAS, especially if the TSB said, "We're going to fix some minor glitches while destroying the biggest reason you have the radio...and there's nothing you can do about it."

Respectfully ... I can see your point of view regarding my post. And yes, I do have an axe to grind with @RamCares, as explained in the post and other @RamCares posts and I stand behind what I posted.

I know this next sentence may be even more irritating to you ... but I wrote a lot more negative examples of their failures, but went back and edited them out. In the previous posts, I've offered ways @RamCares can do better by us, not only in this Forum, but many other websites that discuss the problems with the Android Auto interface ... which is a cause for Distracted Driving and a hazard to the driver and all those on the road with them.

We love our Rams. They are fantastic vehicles and this site has been nothing short of a Godsend for the amount of help and advice it has given me and many others. However, a substantial amount of problems/complaints ... and help from members ... are about the interface between our phones and Android Auto - and many of them don't have answers or solutions that are conducive to a better interaction between the phone and Android Auto Interface.

Since Android Auto/@RamCares/Stellantis staff does not have answers at any level of Tech Support.
I'll show 9 disconnected phone calls and in one instance 4:18 of time on the phone bouncing from Tech to Teck Supervisors without any of them having a solution, yet admitting they've heard my problem many times - including one Tech who knew the XDA Forums had a couple threads on my issues, and I quote, "I'm unable to help you further, only submit this into the Database and hope you get a fix in the next update, or someone will call you back".
However, there are no updates and as you'd expect ... no one is calling me back.

So ... I'm sorry ... truly sorry if as an Admin you feel this may hurt the Forum or tarnish the relationship between this forum and @RamCares ... but I've no where else to tell them that might carry any weight.

And for that reason ... thank you for keeping my post up. And as you can see, there's others who are also unhappy with their (lack of) actions.

If it seems like there's not that many complaints from others it's the amount of Apple to Android phone users. I don't think Apple users are having anywhere near the issues us Android users are. In fact, my brother (Apple) plugged his phone into my truck on a long trip and it synced and worked a lot better than my Android does. Punishment enough that he busted my chops about it for the 10 hour drive we shared over the holidays LOLOLLL.

So as an Android user (a minority by far) ... we are having issues with the Android Auto Interface and we're not getting anything that resembles a positive result from Stellantis/Android Auto or @RamCares ... and I want them to know it.

Thank you for letting this be a place to express our problems, frustrations and questions so (hopeful, yet doubtful), we may find answers.

Thank you for your clarification. Nothing about your post irritated me, nor do I believe that it hurt the Forum or any relationships. Yes I left your post in public view because it wasn't the content, it was the way you expressed it in that moment which read more like an attack than a series of complaints. I don't think we need to beat this particular horse any further.

The Admins and Moderators are here to uphold Forum Rules and keep this community a friendly and informative place to be, every once in a while that works out. :happy175:

Is there a way to opt out of OTA updates? Frankly, that's not a feature I want on a vehicle.

Seems some of saintly’s issues are around Android Auto, AA. Some the issues with AA are extremely difficult to deal with from a developer perspective. Google is great with innovation but it comes with a price. They can’t make up their mind with AA if it will be an app, folded into google assistant, driving mode, part of the OS or some / all of the above. The api’s are a dumpster fire. Inconsistent, changes between versions, depreciations with little notice, etc. I feel for the fca devs trying to integrate a somewhat embedded real-time system like a truck radio with AA.

I fixed my AA issues by switching to iPhone. No I am not a fan of Apples walled garden approach. However, CarPlay was a vastly superior experience. Plugged in the phone and it just works. Siri integration is very slick and I can do most everything hands free. I spend a lot of time in the car and depend on my phone. For me the trade off was worth accepting Apples approach. CarPlay is part of the OS. Always has been and looks like it always will be. Apples api’s are consistent and stable. Maybe not as cutting edge feature rich as Android but that is part of the trade off.

Hi,

Thank you for this offer.
I'm currently away from the vehicle till Sunday. Although I have a short list of things I find infuriating, I'd rather take the time to walk through them again while in the truck to provide the specifics for clarity.

I'll contact soon.

Hi,
Please forgive me for not following up sooner. I’ve had several personal, health issues (no sympathy required as the future looks good), and my business just signed a deal to be distributed by a national chain.

Secondly – thank you for this opportunity to present my problems to you. I will be including this on the Ram Forums that I partake in as that’s where my voice was heard as well as dozens of members asking for me to keep the thread open for full disclosure. It would be the right thing to do.

I've a few details to wrap up that I'd like to be specific and detailed on, so it should be posted to Ram Cares and this forum within a day or two.

Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE: Here is the letter I sent to @RamCares regarding the issues I have with syncing my phones to my Ram.

Hi Courtney,

Please forgive me for not getting this up sooner. I’ve had several personal, health issues (no sympathy required as the future looks good), and my business just signed a deal to be distributed by a national chain.

Secondly – thank you and the Ram Forum Mediators for this opportunity to present my problems to you. I will be including this on the Ram Forums that I partake in as that’s where my voice was heard as well as many members asked me to keep the thread open for full disclosure and updates. It would be the right thing to do.

Here’s a list of problems that aren’t only mine, but listed as problems or complaints on several Cell Phone and Automotive sites when it comes to Android Auto and the syncing to our Android phones. I know my 'type-tone' in other posts has come across abrasively - as the list below has no answers from anyone in Customer Service, no matter how high up the Supervisor ladder I got. I sincerely hope you can provide answers. Looking forward to your reply.

My list is specifically for the following:

2021 Ram 1500 Limited
Radio ID: 1*****
Version: 3.00

Phone #1 - Samsung S21 Ultra
Phone #2 - Samsung S22 Ultra
Phone #3 – LG V40

Key:
AA = Android Auto
BT = Bluetooth

1.) Why does Android Auto FORCE the activation of Bluetooth on the phone? Shouldn’t that be the operator of the phone and automobile? Especially when multiple phones are synced to the vehicle and all may be within the range of the Bluetooth of AA upon ignition start. We need the ability to change the default to a “request”. Reasons why:
  • Other Driver(s) will want their phone to sync to Android Auto, yet AA defaults to the first user EVERY start and re-start.
  • AA will connect to the first phone synced on the list through BT, even if another phone is connected via USB before the vehicle is started and/or even if it wasn’t disconnected.
  • AA is the only system that requires BOTH BT and USB to sync. TOO CONTROLING AND INVASIVE! It’s only set up this way to access ALL the information in our phones and under contract, you get to copy, keep and use it for “yet to be determined uses in the future”. Why do you need to have access to it ALL???? (… but I digress.)
  • The system needs to allow the phone to be the Dominant Control … not AA. Yes, there is a function to make the phone the Dominant Control, but then the functionality between phone and Entertainment System are at odds with each other – a distraction the Driver shouldn’t have to deal with (elimination of a distracted driver is what the whole system is supposed to be about)

2.) After starting the vehicle, yet not connecting the phone to the vehicle, the phone can not connect to the internet. This is because AA overrides the phone settings to drop WiFi if it’s not available and connect to Cellular Service. The only way to get the phone to connect to Cellular Service is to go into the phone and turn off Wifi AND Bluetooth. I can’t imagine the day when there’s an emergency, someone can’t connect to their Cellular provider, a bad situation turns worse and when it’s explained they couldn’t connect to their Cell Service … it’s found out it’s AA’s fault.

3.) Long explanation for full understanding of the problem: If I was playing something through the Google Podcast App or Spotify, got to my destination, turned off ignition, pulled the USB cord and left the vehicle. It’s natural that I’d continue listening in my home or office and likely have moved on to another song, podcast, etc. So when I start the vehicle and plug in the phone, I should be able to pick up where I left off on my phone. But that’s not the case! When I start the vehicle, AA kept the "last played moment” where I left off when unplugging and will start playing at that point if it was on these two Apps … although … that App isn’t open on my phone! Here’s something fun … (and shows how invasive the AA system is!) … that App won’t show being open on my phone so I can stop it from playing unless I pull the USB cord! Although this is an occasional thing with Google Apps … it’s wildly aggressive with Spotify! Sometimes, TWO APPS WILL PLAY AT THE SAME TIME! ! !

4.) If ignition is turned off while phone is synced and was playing something there is no AA App for (3rd Party Apps like: Substack/Patreon/MP3 download/etc.), through the phone. When ignition is turned back on, the system defaults to FM Radio ... and not a station I listen to or have programmed. (Although I learned that if I program every Preset, then it will turn onto a Preset.). This problem is same when listening to SiriusXM, while the phone is plugged in to keep it charged (with no other Apps running/in operation). And why is the volume so high when it defaults to an FM Station. Shouldn’t the volume be at a level where it was when ignition was turned off?
Why is that volume level the ‘default’ of the system? Why not just go mute and let us pick what we want to listen to as well as how loud we want it?

5.) If some buttons are multi-purpose/multi-use (Navigation, Phone & Android buttons) and system changed them to be exclusive to AA when I plug in the phone, but I want the Ram Navigation on the big screen, why do I have to disconnect the phone to get to get the Navigation button back? Why can’t I press and hold the button to show it’s other functions? Or maybe there be an additional row of buttons added to the bottom of the screen for better functionality?

6.) Ambient Light Assist is too sensitive in one scenario and not enough in the other. The interior light levels decrease and adjust the screen to “night mode” way too fast (less than a second) such as going under a bridge or heavy tree cover on a sunny day ... yet when back in direct sunlight, it takes a very long time (more than several seconds) to return to “Day Mode” ... This is VERY HAZARDOUS! We need to see the screen for Navigation – especially in high traffic areas where overpasses block sunlight and the next intersection is immediately on the other side of the bridge with a combination of 8 different ways to go and we can’t see the screen! It’s not needed when we are familiar with the area and know the route to take … but when we’re using Navigation, we need to see the details in REAL TIME!

7.) Volume isn't same when switching from AM, FM, SiriusXM or Podcast off phone. Shouldn’t the default volume be the same as we switch from one platform or the other? (NOTE: I do like that I can adjust the volume of Navigation or WAZE independently of the music/podcasts/downloads). I know, I know - it's almost the same complaint as #4, but technically, one is just switching inputs and the other default based on ignition on/off.

8.) Why is default screen set to my Contact Favorites? I can’t find any way to change to a different default. Preference to last Station or the Media Option Screen as the first thing you do when getting in a car is listen to something.

9.) Why isn’t there a Preset seat heat & vent controls both passenger & driver? I understand and endorse putting the heat and vent on full blast to start – but they stay on – and to make a change takes several different steps to get to the controls. This is a Driver Distraction. A preset or a button to access controls would be beneficial.

10.) Using Voice Command:
If we manually “Pause” a podcast, either recorded, through Spotify or Google Podcasts. Then request something from the Voice Recognition System ... Whether it was successful or failed, the Podcast will start again … yet I pressed “Pause” beforehand! I’d understand if I activated Voice Command while something was playing, but not when I pressed “Pause” beforehand.

11.) Why doesn’t the Clock at the top of the Center Screen stay on throughout any and all of the programs and when the phones sync with the Automobile? How can we initiate that to happen?

As stated, I am aware there is a function to make AA or the phone the dominant action which reduces, but does not eliminate the above list. If I make the phone the dominant factor, many of the functions of the screen and controls don’t sync, or work in harmony with each other – and in some cases, switching from download or App in my phone to a Voice Command puts them BOTH on at the same time … which is counterintuitive to the entire design to keep the driver focused on the road and not distracted.

Here's a list I hope AA will be able provide users in the immediate future:

*We should be able to download external Apps/Programs. This will allow AA to sync with the phones seamlessly. At least give us the top Download Apps like Patreon, Substack, etc.

*We get “Preset Radio Station Buttons”, why not a “Favorite Action” row of Buttons – that can be programmable if there are variables in their functionality.

*Give us full control of the options within the system ??

There’s a growing list of threads teaching us how to do it – why not get in front of it and open it up.
Keeping options proprietary is a losing game and makes for a discontented user – proven by the fact there are so many dissatisfied users, that websites and hacker forums are adding hacks to take over the interface for the functionality that ARE IN THE SYSTEM, yet not available for us to access them natively.

I hope you read this with the intent of the message – to make it better for every user.

I look forward to your reply and hope it has constructive answers with usable solutions.

Thank you for this opportunity

@RamCares....

I have a 2022 Rebel (Feb build date) with the 5c 12" radio and is currently running FoTa v21.D5 ...

There are still issues with TomTom maps not updating traffic, Gas prices, weather etc.

I had access to a 2022 Limited with same 5c 12" radio but a 2021 build date that got the latest FoTa v23.13 which fixed All the above issues (I observed this personally).

I was told by my local dealer that the TSB 08-025-22 for v23.13 only applies to vehicles built before January 2022 with 5c radios and that's why it wasn't available for my truck? (Previous version 21.D5 says it's for earlier trucks yet my truck still updated to it).

Same radio, same year truck, yet can't get the FoTa update to fix this issue?
