Update!!!! Bad news ... just got my gears changed from 3.21 to 3.92... along with Yukon dura posi .... less than 200 miles on it and hit some black ice ... rear tires spun, and heard some crunching and clunking and no power In rear end .... had to limp home using the 4wd ....... no good . This shop is gonna have to tow my truck to them to fix it !

For those interested in the pricey 3.21-3.92 swap in 2015 up ram 1500 Here is my bill...

He was the most highly recommended 4wd shop around who does this stuff on a reg ....

Motive gear brand gears along with a Yukon dura grip locker ..... So far I've taken it easy on it ( recommended for the first 500nmiles... But feels like a diff truck! Then I'm going to drain the gear oil in the rear and put a diff cover and some redline gear oil in. Drove it home about50 miles at various speeds and was nice and quiet . Fuel economy for that distance on back roads was 18mpg ... Not bad.

Wow. That is insane. I have done GM IFS front and rear as a shade tree mechanic, and the front was a pain, but...

Problem with these is you have to replace the entire front diff.... Part alone was 1300

Wow! Thanks for posting. I’ve speculated about doing it to satisfy my need for speed but I might as well purchase a slightly used F-4 Phantom...at least the “cool” factor might get me out of hot water with my wife!

I bet the Greeks will sell you one of theirs (they were flying them until recently)...might need a second job for the fuel bill, as Rhinos are thirstier than even our Hemis!

I justified it by needing gears for towing , performance was a bonus .....I have too much in the truck mod wise to justify the loss I’d take to buy a whole new truck. ( mine has 24k and is a 2015 and only owe 15k) I figured I’d take atleast a 10-15k hit on the truck if I trade in and buy new with 3.92... figured I might as well make it how I want it as I am keeping for the extended near future. .

If you're in no rush, keep an eye on your local buy/sell pages etc, sooner or later somebody will be selling a set of 3.92 4X4 diffs.Usually cheaper to buy used low milege diffs then it is to just buy the front diff new.

That was really expensive. But Beast makes a good point about how much more a expensive a new/newer truck would be. What do you do..... driving a big ol pick up, and pulling trailers isn't cheap.

This makes me wonder if a used Ram with 3.92s is worth any more when it's time to sell or trade, than a truck with 3.21s? If you could recoup some of the money you spent on gears, it make regearing a little more attractive.

Congrats on the 3.92, you’ll really like it.

Sir thank you sir. I’ll update with some comparison vids in about 1000 miles ;-)

Like anything it’s probably only worth more to the person wanting it . The steelership wohld tell u no but private sale ... great selling point to the right person.... I’m keeping this truck for atleast 6 more yeArs , that will make it almost 10 yrs old. That equals 37$ a month for the next six years is what the gear change cost me ;-)

It’s a noticeable difference from 3.21 .... there’s some charts out that I’ll look for them... it takes a ton of stress off the tranny compared to the 3.21 and also allows for larger tires to be less of an issue as well . I’m sure someone will chime in that can’t explain it much better.

I'd be willing to bet 95% of all the first time RAM buyers wouldn't know the difference or that there are more than one option. When I bought my 2015 RAM all I knew was that I wanted to get away from GM and Ford. After joining a forum and learning more about my RAM did I learn that 3.92's were an option. Hell my first RAM didn't even have limited slip. This time I knew what to look for. An extra $95 for 3.92's/$495 for LSD seems like a real bargain now although I definitely get worse gas mileage than I did before.

Beast, and Tide, I think you guys are right on the money. But I will add this:

If, and that's a big if, 3.92s save you transmission problems down the road, the 3.92s paid for them selves.

On page 84 of tha January Motor Trend, they list their "Real World MPG", of 5 Rams tested. If you want to put any stock in what they print, the 4X4 Rebel Quad Cab did the worst on the highway @19.4 mpg, the 4X4 Long Horn Crew got 21.6 highway. Those 2 trucks did not have the hybrid electric assist. But, they both had 3.92 rear ends. I often wonder if Gas mileage and final gears are related.... I've read it both ways so many times....the more I read, the more confused I get.

January 2019. One thing I know for certain. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, gas is cheaper than it's been in years. Enjoy your lowish gears.

Congrat's! Your truck and if that's what you wanted and needed--good for you. Hope you get many enjoyable miles from the swap. I love my 3.92's and I'm glad I have them.

And that's ONLY $1.19 a day!
LESS than a nickel an hour!

Hell, if you give up just ONE cup of coffee a day, YOU TOO can be burnin' rubber with 3.92s! LOL.

How could you NOT do it? I would.
