does anyone know if the new trucks come from the factory with a special break in period oil? if so when should i change oil the first time? i have just under 2k miles now...

when i bought the truck dealer recommended their plan for oil changes every 5k but it was extra cost but can add it later... I'm not crazy about dealers working on my truck i have a trusted mechanic...

i figured around 5k or a little before on the first oil change... then is it ok to follow the EVIC? even if it says 8-10k for oil change?

and lastly i think the factory oil is pennzoil right? i don't want to switch to full synthetic but want a good conventional oil... do i need to stay with what the dealer put in?

I'm getting several oil changes free from the dealer , he told me to schedule my first oil change for just under 3000 miles , he said call in around 2700 miles , if that helps

Honda is the only known major manufacturer that ships with a special break in oil. Everybody else ships with whatever off the shelf oil spec'd. in the manual.

As to when to first change it, there is nothing wrong with following the actual owners manual recommendations and using the EVIC. Others will give you anecdotal recommendations based on "feelings" and other non corroborative recommendations.

That being said, there is no penalty for changing early other than a lighter wallet, just do not exceed owners manual recommendations.

As Hoot said above--->No Special Break-in oil is used...

If you do not plan on running synthetic oil... I personally would run PYB...It is one of the most Robust conventional oils on the market...

There on alot of dealership service departments that don't even service autos with the specified oil...

I personally would change the Factory Fill at 3K miles or before... Then after what ever OCI you chose to follow...

I myself would not go past 8K miles on conventional oil... Only if all those miles were Interstate or Turnpike miles-->Since these miles are Very Easy on the oil and engine... Choosing a OCI mostly depends on your driving style and daily routine... The new OLM {Seem} to reflect this...

Get your Free oil changes-->If you trust this Dealerships Service Dept... Let them do the first oil change and deal with the over torqued oil filter...

This is my first time going by the OLM so I will see just how many miles I can travel before I reach the 10% oil life left...

I just rolled over 5000km's (3000 miles) and I'm putting in Red Line with a Royal Purple Filter... I think that's enough distance for any kind of break in... although I'm not sold on break in times with these newer engines...

Like Syn said, penzoil yellow bottle is the best conventional oil or top of the heap anyhow. If you plan on going up to 10k on any oil, you should at a minimum gets a synthetic fiber filter like Amsoil AE or Royal Purple filter. Synthetic filters are spun glass so they do not degrade ever, or at least for 14 months as I have tested it myself.

Now, 10k is very borderline to run conventional oils proven by Used Oil analysis. Conventional oils (TBN) get into the red zone faster then synthetic because they have less additives. If you plan on doing a lot of running 10k on your oil, you should send out for a black stone analysis kit and do a UOA at some point at the 10k point. But if it was me running conventional oil, I'd be changing somewhere around 7500k miles or less, and using a synthetic filter.

I changed my oil with PYB at 5k, and then switched to Redline with a Royal Purple filter at 10k. As Hootbro said, my reasoning is a bit of guess and not based on anything. I didn't want to let my factory fill go 10k miles even though the manual says its OK. I did one conventional change to flush out some of the break in before going synthetic. Just my .02

Yes: pennzoil is the specified oil due too the contract with Fiat!

You can run other brands of conventional oil but PYB according to the VOAs posted and many UOAs posted is a Very Robust oil loaded with a great elixir of additives and Great Base Oil... Many have considered it very close to a synthetic oil...

Everyone has their own idea of a proper oil change interval. Chrysler says to use the EVIC but under no circumstances should you exceed 10,000miles. If you fall under the severe category, it's 6500miles. If you drive in dusty or off-road conditions, it's considered severe.

I got 2 years free oil changes when I bought mine. Dealer recommended bringing it in every 6k miles or 6 months. Just had my first oil change at 5500 miles and the oil life meter was still around 25%. If, after the freebies I stay with conventional I will maintain the 6k mile interval.

Why not consider synthetic blend as a medium?

idk id go one way or the other not sure wha to think of the blend.. i either want to stick with a good conventional or if its affordable a good synthetic.
