I have a 2005 5.9 cummins and the other day I was driving at night and my voltage indicator quit and my check gages light came on. My first thought was a bad alternator and stopped and had it checked. It checked out ok. I had shut the engine down before having it checked and when I restarted the engine the voltmeter began working again and the alternator checked ok. I happened again a few days later and when I pulled over and shut down the engine and restarted the meter went back to normal function, however lower voltage and after a while it would return to normal output. This leads me to believe it is not the alternator but maby a sensor or computor problem as it resets after cycling the ignition switch. Please help.
