hey all, I just bought a CPO 2017 V8, and this is my first truck, I was just wondering what the average time to warm up was? I have noticed on a few cool mornings since I got the truck that when I flip the dash controls to heat, it blows cold air for a good 15-20 minutes, even while driving, but once everything is up to normal operating temperature it seems to be running good both heat and AC work and work strong, was wondering if this is normal? also I noticed that no matter what setting defrost, or directed at feet or upper body, that the air will only blow through the defrost vents until it reaches normal temp? is all this normal? I still am covered by the CPO bumper to bumper, id like to have some understanding before winter sets in, thanks for all the help

Do you have the auto button? Also is that what you’re using when this happens?

Get it fixed. You should see the temp gauge rising in a couple of minutes and heat should be noticeable. My 14 Sport w/o auto temp control would be putting out heat in a couple miles. The new 19 take about a minute with auto temp control. If the gauge doesn't show heat you probably have a bad thermostat or the PO put in a lower temp thermostat.

The data point to the dealer if the temp gauge is showing heat and I'm not getting it, Fix it. If it's not showing heat in a few minutes, fix it. That's the data they should need.

do not have auto temp control, its manual(knobs) I noticed this morning it was warm outside(60F) and everything warmed up fine/faster than it did with below 40 degree mornings, heat and ac both worked normal/strong within 5 minutes of starting up and driving,....the temp gauge rises normally and I am at 185F at the transmission when driving within 10 miles, I read something that the Rams have thermal management system that will not direct heat into cabin before everything is up to operating temperatures, wondering if this is it and on the cold mornings I just notice it a bit more?

I've noticed my truck takes about 5 miles (55-60 mph) to get warm air out of the vents. Its been like this since i bought the truck 3 years ago.

If your coolant level is low, it will affect your heat.
Is it leaking?

so took it back to the dealership, they diagnosed a bad blend door actuator...they replaced it....guess what happend? worked for two days and went to start up this AM in 25 degree weather, and exact same issue, blowing all cold air, and through only defrost and floor vents

coolant levels are fine, no leaks....thank you all for the feedback

the more i am reading online, the more i see that there is a mode door that could possibly be an issue as well? this morning same issue, ran for 10 minutes with a 10 minute drive and only cold air through vents and today it was only from floor vents no defrost even, regardless of setting

Definitely sounds like the mode door, maybe they just replace the whole heater box since it's under warranty.

With the 8spd transmission there is a three-way valve that will direct coolant not being used to heat the cab of the truck to the transmission TMU. If there is a problem with that valve it can throw an error code but not always.

What was your engine temp after 10 minutes?

honestly do not remember the exact #s off top of my head, but everything seemed to have warmed up in an acceptable amount of time the gauge was defintley off of Cold after idling for 10 and driving it was between C and midline of temp gauge

Dealership had the car for a week, diagnosed with a faulty electronic control module for the controls, replaced it....worked for 4 days this time and back to the same issues...was told the mode door was working fine when they pulled the dash out

This all really sucks. My 09 has all cold UNTIL I turn heal control up to down to up, etc. then I hear a 'door slam' then I have full heat. Seem to not get any variation using control. Full cold followed by full heat. No idea if bad door or what???

I certainly understand why this would be concerning, Superman49. If you are not able to determine a solution based on advice provided here, we kindly recommend following up with your local Ram dealer on this. Our team is just a PM away if you are in need of any additional assistance.

it is really hit or miss for me, I have had starts where no matter the setting air flow only comes from defrost vents and others where I cannot get any air flow out of defrost vents, this is starting to be a real concern given the time of year and weather changes

Just an update Incase anyone else runs into these issues...dealer has had it for over a week and unable to reproduce the issue, I sent them a video of the air flow not working on the appropriate settings...I was told that when they replaced the control module that it could have caused a short in the blend door they replaced, any chance that would have caused the door for defrost/floor actuator to short as well? I’m assuming so...

Just curious, does this truck have Cabin filters? (Located behind glove box) I working on my neighbors jeep which has similar controls and was experiencing similar issues and I checked everything until it dawned on me about his vehicle possibly having cabin filters, which it did upon inspection. When i removed them they looked like bee hive frames. Completely clogged with dirt and debris. Once removed the air flow and change from zone to zone was massively apparent. Also it blew heat out faster because the air moved faster through the jewter core and warmed the cold system of ducts and so forth quicker. Just an FYI sometimes the solution is the easiest fix.
