So I'll be investing in a 3500 Diesel. I'll be using it as my daily commuter vehicle and then towing my 5th wheel about 6-10 times/year. My question is... are there opportunities out there to put my vehicle to work on the weekends hauling or towing and if so, how would you go about finding them. I want to make sure I'm keeping the truck working and happy. And the extra cash wouldn't hurt either.

I have no idea!! Probably depends on where you live and what you want to haul.

I'm more concerned about breaking the engine in properly as I won't be getting my 5th wheel until sometime after the truck. I read up on moving 5th wheels between the factory and dealerships but with the amount of deadheading involved it sounds like I would be lucky to break even

I don't recommend moving RVs around the country. A buddy of mine did that for a while.

His conclusions were 1) There's no real money in it based on the prevailing pay scale, 2) He was away from home too much (doing it on weekends only did not work), and, 3) deadheading killed his earnings.

Dead heading & insurance eliminates profit

Most every State requires $750,000 Combined Commercial insurance, full coverage for $6,000 yearly, if you are using you vehicle for business & then there are other things, like registering for a DBA $100.

If you want to make a bit of $ on the side, keep it between friends & neighbors. word of mouth type things.

Don’t even think about pulling rv’s around the country. No money in it. Did it back in 2002. Unless your single, not a job for a married person. Best to buy a good trailer and pull for cash in your area. Not worth turning a 1 ton or less into a commercial vehicle.

Around here (Florida) several folks advertise hauling services on the various Facebook pages. It is mostly for local hauling. Also there are tons of consignment shops and people are always looking for someone to haul furniture.
Whether they are insured or not (probably not) or should be I won't get into.

Few things I have seen...

Junk haulers - remove junk from peoples homes/property
Car Haulers - but lots of time that is not "just down the road"
General Hauling - but like above it is usually "not down the road"

Look up the show Shipping Wars

I would say your best bet it to advertise on Craigs List or Market Place that you offer hauling services
