After using 4L the other day, I have noticed the light on the dash now flickers on and off real fast while going down the road in 2H.

Any thoughts on where I need to start looking?

My 2000 Ram 1500 5.9 had a vacuum leak that caused it to not go into 4x4. I'd have to go in and out a bunch of times before it would lock and would have problems coming out. I'd start there, as it's a fairly common problem. My leak was down, under the truck by the front axle. Broken/cracked line.

That actually makes sense to me because of the behavior I am seeing with the A/C vent door.... I suspected vacuum leak, but haven't noticed any drop in performance or smoothness of idle.

I don't recall any performance issues, but that makes sense with the vent issues. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

After going back into 2wd did you back up the 60 or so feet needed to kick the hubs out?
