Like, how do you work it? This is for a 1995, with the manual shifter on the floor. Are you supposed to be completely stopped before shifting into or out of 4WD? I'm sure that's true for 4-low, but what about 4-high? I haven't used a floor shifter for decades and I have no operator's manual for this new-to-me truck. And should the transmission be in neutral before shifting the transfer case? Does it help to let the truck roll slightly when shifting?

2 hi to 4 hi, lift foot off gas, shift smartly while moving at up to 40 mph. To go from 4 hi to 4 low, stop, place transmission in neutral, step on brake, wait 30 seconds for everything to quit moving, make the shift quick and smooth to 4 low. Some guys actually turn the motor off while doing this, i don't.

Hi Everybody,

Talking about transfer cases... Let me join the conversation.

I own 99' Laramie 5.9L gas, 4x4, ~164 K miles, Dart heads, tubular ssteel headers.

4 month ago I got a rebuilt (63 K mi) 46RE unmolested tranny. At the time, the original (New Process Gear 231 D) transfer case was retained. Guys in the shop said that there is nothing wrong with it. Hubs, brakes and shaft u-joints are ~2 years old.

In the past I heard a faint speed dependent "clicking" when 4 Hi was engaged, but I never drove faster than 25-30 mph in 4Hi and it did not sound alarming. I checked the oil level periodically; looked good; no metal shavings.

Recently, I had to take my wife to ER in a bad winter weather. I drove faster, 40-50 mph. The "clicking" became louder reminding a hammer drill, still speed dependent, but the frequency was approx 6-8 clicks per wheel revolution . Interesting, that it disappears when my foot is off the accelerator pedal. No clicking whilst turning, but it clicks in reverse on power.

What may be the culprit?
I would deeply appreciate your ideas.

When approximately did the clicking begin, and are you the original owner?

I trust that you have the original half-shafts.
What is the condition of the boots on the half-shafts?
What is the service history on them?

164K miles is likely longer than most OEM half-shafts would survive without regular periodic maintenance.

I'm the second owner (started at 83k mi). Shafts are original, good condition
U-joints were replaced in 2022. Ball joints 6 yrs ago. Boots are not present on this MY/model, see pics. There is a "sealing ring", which rotates w/the shaft and does not attach to the upright leaving tiny gap. After a while the ring disintegrates.
Not a best design...
