What kind of mileage are you getting with a Hemi and 3.92 gears?

I'm looking for a bed cover myself.
a lot of in town driving will kill your average. these 8 speed trans have very low first gear. my '19 had the 8hp75 which had 5.0 first gear. I never kept track of city mileage but it was not very good. where my 5.7 3.92 shined tho was on the road.

No. Studies have shown covering the bed does not aid in aerodynamics unfortunately. You have the right-lead foot disease.

Jokes aside, these truck are heavy. 22 Classic RCSB 4x4 weighs 5,030 lbs. Porker. With 3.21 gears I average a hand calculated 15mpg mixed city and interstate. Mostly stop and go city as our infrastructure is trash. Cruising 65 down back roads, the computer will read 22 to 23 but not sustainable here once you hit a populous area. That's MDS deactivated.

Not the hemis fault. My 98 GMC with 5.7 Vortec gets about the same with 140 less horsepower. Modern trucks are heavy. My 17 2500 with 6.4 gets 9 to 11mpg mixed towing. The 1500 feels like a prius compared.
Ok, I guess I should also say that I'm going by the the mpg that the display is saying, I guess I need to figure it by hand to make sure it's accurate. In hindsight I may have a heavy right foot, but I doubt that cuts it by 5-6 mpg... But I could be wrong

I am buying a RAM 1500

I have to make a choice between two RAM 1500s

Both are 2022 with non-etorque Hemi 5.7
Truck A has the 3.92
Truck B has the 3.21

Open for input on which one to buy.

i do occasional light towing with a 17.5 Deep V Aluminum Boat with 75hp Merc on it

Either one will work with that light of a load. I have a 3.92, and get good mileage whwen I want to, and pretty good when towwing. Really doesn't matter what i'm towing, as wind resistance is the killer no matter what it is.

Here is the mind twisting pickle i am in:

i prefer the 3.21 over the 3.92 for EXACTLY the reasons you stated

Truck A with the 3.21 is $41k
Truck B with the 3.92 is $37.5k

Truck A is the color i prefer
Truck B is a color i can live with

Both Trucks are 2022 and within 3k miles of each other on the Odometer

QUESTION: What if i buy Truck B for less $$$ and then later change the Gearing to 3.21 = Good idea or Bad ???

Brother.... you are asking this question in multiple people's threads. Be patient and I promise you'll get all the answers you want (and probably some you don't). :)

You'll spend every dollar you'd "saved" in changing the gears over on the cheaper truck. If you don't want the 3.92 rear end don't get it.

Now that said, my current truck is a 1500 2wd with the 3.92s and factory limited slip and I love it. Pulls hard, passes with ease on the highway. Tows our little enclosed utility trailer like it's not even there. Will roast the Cooper Discoverer AT3s if I punch it at a light. Gets around 20mpg on a mixed city/highway drive cycle, which is fine by me. I wouldn't have bought a Hemi if I cared about fuel economy.

My first 1500 was bought new in 19' and it had 3.21's.
Was very happy with it, and with a 32 gallon tank, I got a lot of miles on the highway with her.

I now have a 23' Warlock I bought new in Feb 24' and it has 3.92's.
Same 32 gallon tank, but it does consume more fuel.

Example: 3.21 at 120km/h the rpm was around 1500rpm
3.92 at 120km/h the rpm is around 2000 rpm

However, the 3.21 is open diff and the 3.92 is anti-spin. so different characteristics, and depending on your driving and where/on what, the anti-spin diff is a bonus.

The other bonus of the 3.92 is the take off from a dead stop; it's fantastic!
And I can lay down some siccc 11's, too.

The dead stop take of with the 3.21 is decent, but that one wheel peel just doesn't hit the same.

I knew what I was sacrificing with the 3.92's (a bit of fuel economy), but I'll not willingly settle for less in a gear option moving forward. I didn't buy a HEMI Ram for fuel economy, so it doesn't phase me in the least.

The other advantage is that I can tow 3000# more with the 3.92 vs the 3.21. Not that I tow heavy or often, but at times I do connect a car hauler or trailer to haul a mobile saw mill for a buddy.

Lastly, the transmission tends to kick in and out of 7th and 8th gears on the highway a lot more with 3.21's. This does add some more wear and tear.

3.92's every day and every time! ;)

Just came back from test rides on a 3.21 and 3.92

3.92 is the way to go for sure

PROBLEM - there are three colors i do not like Red, White and Black

Had two RAMs side by side at the Dealer - Black next to the Silver

Unfortunately i cannot live with the color Black on the RAM with the 3.92

Perhaps get creative with a partial wrap in your preferred colour to break up the unbearable all black colour?

Most vehicles on dealer lots will be white, black or silver/gray. Those colors are the least offensive to the widest range of people, so that's what dealers order. Pick the one which offends you least or shop around at other dealers in your area. When buying from dealer stock it's "take what you can get"... color is always the last thing I worry about.

Black is ok but for me, Silver

LOVED the 3.92
