I have a friend who asked to buy my 2014 5.7 Lonestar Crew Cab. If I sell, I’d like to upgrade myself to a newer model with low miles. How new must I buy to avoid these two common issues?

1. What model year did they finally fix the Hemi valve lifter and cam issue, and what did they change?

2. Ditto for the shuddering on upshifts in the 8-speed transmission - when was it finally fixed?

My 2014 also suffered the common premature failure of the fuel-level sensor, is that a thing of the past on newer models?

Thanks!

Quite literally depends on who you ask.

I have a 2014, never had any issues, fuel level common? that new to me .
I have heard of fuel pump going out, that can happen to any car or truck of any make.
Don't sit and idle your truck for extended times, that seems to be the main issues with the lifters, low oil pressure at slow RPM.
nothing wrong with cams, if a lifter roller don't go out.
I don't think I have ever had a shutter on a up shift, use more gas pedal should fix it.
How many miles on your truck?

Every perfect thing ever made, May have a problem, one time then the internet goes haywire.
The sky is falling.
Go find a nice truck, test drive it and if you like it , buy it.

I'm pretty sure that for half ton trucks they addressed whatever outstanding imperfections exist on the hemi by chopping 2 cylinders off, lining up the remaining ones and bolting a snail or two on the side. Which means all new imperfections but that's another topic.

Almost 90k and exhaust bolts are the only thing that has hit me.
Every brand and year has had it's problems. There are Monday/Friday trucks out there, and what you get is just the luck of the draw.
Yup, want a Tuesday-Thursday pre-covid built truck. Mine is pre-covid, just not know which day, LOL. But runs solid, nothing major, 3 recalls done, could be a heck of a lot worse like the Current GM's puking motors, etc.,.

OP: If U buy it, maintain well with good OCI schedule, and good fluids and filters, use top tier fuel and enjoy the ride. The cam/lifters issue never been solved, but a good OCI schedule and MX goes a lot further for keeping engine healthy, and as little idling as possible. All IMHO.

Find as new and as low mile a Classic as you can. There are still a few 2024 Classics sitting new on dealer lots, if you don't want to be picky about color or options.

If you plan to keep the truck long term spring for the extended warranty at time of purchase and have all your maintenance done at the dealer. That way if there ever is a problem you are covered. They'll sell you one all the way out to 10 years / 100k miles if you want it. Yeah it costs some, but is cheaper than having to replace the engine if a lifter drops and destroys the cam.

Also keep every receipt ref maintenance.

They never fixed issue number 1,
but from what i've seen if you change your oil every 5,000 km from the start instead of the "recommended 10,000-15,000 km" even with synthetic oils.... you should be fine..
also dont idle...
But if you buy a newer used vehicle how do you know how the previous owner took care of the car... but you can check the idle hours.

but remember there's another issue the cracked back exhaust manifold bolts that are apparently prone to breaking!

There are some "Most miles" threads ...lot of guys have real high miles on their pickup. Number of guys over 300k. So.... you just have to jump in and as mentioned above, find the truck you like & adopt a good oil-change strategy with quality synthetic oil. Don't worry about what you can't control.
