When is it time to keep it, or look at new ?

Write down more options like buy a used truck, or buy a bike and keep your truck, or a sports car, or a daily driver. New rams are just bad investments. Two bad we cant manufacturer another chip shortage, those were the good days for selling your old truck.

True... the only reason I finally decided to let my dually go was because a dealership called and offered me $60k for a 2016 3500 with over 130k miles. I thought they were bluffing considering I paid $48k 3 years prior. But they wrote me a check and I took it. If it hadn't been for that it would still be sitting in my driveway.

Another annoying new "feature" brought to us by out-of-control coder bro's: loud beeping after an hour's drive to tell you to take a break from driving. With no ability to deactivate it, at least according to the manual.

Oy.

wow

I had bought a Cummins 2001 or 2, I forget, could not shift it my knee was bad and it was a manual. Thought I was gonna take a bath, well a Ford dealer gave me 500 more then I paid for my Cummins on a rock bottom ad car, so I knew the number was legit. Doesn't compare to yours, but there was no reason like chip shortage or something. For weeks I thought they were gonna call me back and say hey man we made a mistake, can you come back, lol.

".The car literally yanked the steering wheel out of my hands (twice) on relatively open interstate"
I had a similar experience with the Silverado and it did find a curb as well as damn near breakingy thumb as the steering wheel spokes went where they wanted. It was quietly repaired under warranty with them saying updated programming was the fix

That is a royal PITA... Wife's Armada has that. I turned off the feature that attempts to "help" me keep it between the lines by yanking the steering wheel but if I even glance up at a roadsign on the interstate a warning pops up on the cluster asking me if I need to take a break from driving.

I had one of my daughters driving a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee that started having many issues and not worth throwing more money on. Decided to have her start driving my 2014, but with new Rams being way too much money found a used 2019 with 56,000 miles nicely optioned at a reasonable price.

The 2014 had about 150k on it and now 165k but lifters starting to get noisy. Now I'm deciding if it would be cost worth rebuilding existing motor or even putting a rebuilt from Jasper or one of the other rebuilders. Other choice would be to just find another used RAM for her.

For OP, the only suggestion I can make would be if your motor doesn't have current issues and truck in general is in good shape, pay down current balance and then look for a lower mileage used RAM.

LOL ....I rented a buzzing butt vehicle not that long ago. That's rude!! Not only that, the accident avoidance features were sketchy and IMO not quite ready for prime-time. Besides the thing constantly buzzing, blinking, alarming over the stupidest of things ...The car literally yanked the steering wheel out of my hands (twice) on relatively open interstate where a stripe used to be (but was sandblasted away) ..the old stripe I think confused the car ...sending us to the side of the road. I muscled it back, but some of those accident avoidance features are horse$hit. I rent quite a few brand new cars to be confident what I'm talking about. And i agree with above 100%.

If you need to cross the lane to avoid a dead animal it fights you for sure! The car I was referring to above wasn't some low end unit, it was a brand new loaded 2024 BMW 5 series ...with like less than 200 miles on it. Told my wife I'll never buy one of those!!! Like mentioned above...endless beeping, lights flashing and other nannies. Sure you can adjust and turn down/off. But still. My fear is those features will end up being as reliable as Ram Air-Suspension systems after 15 years.
That's why I sold my 2018 Caddy CT6 Platinum last year. Had every conceivable bell and whistle on it, with the 3.0 Twin Turbo, 4 wheel steering and self driving "Super Cruise". Only had 40k on it, but I figured as soon as things started to fail on it, there is no way I can keep up on the dealer only repairs

Financially you are almost always better off holding onto the vehicle you have a bit longer. I used to go through vehicles more often but I find I'm no less happy when I keep them longer. And I really don't spend that much more in repairs. Now if I could convince my wife she doesn't need a new van just because she's had the current one for 7 years that would be great. It's reliable and has all the features we really want but it is now "old". But we'll get a new one next year because we can afford it and I'd rather keep my wife happy. I'll be keeping my truck at least another 5 years unless I buy a larger trailer than I can tow with it.

Hi everyone !

My truck is a 2014 ( 10/13 build ) Express currently with 123,000 miles on the truck. I bought this truck used at 98K miles. In the last 25K miles it has had Spark plugs, Thermostat, Water Pump, Coolant, Battery, Serp Belt, Brake Fluid, Brake pads and rotors, Air filter, new tires, transfer case / differential fluids, Flowmaster muffler etc. The truck is running fine at the moment. The trans fluid is about due and the suspension could definitely be refreshed for its age. Currently I owe $11,000 left on the truck.

*** My question is at what point do I stop putting money into the truck and consider looking at something newer ? ***

This truck is going to need cam and lifters eventually ( I drive in manual selected 6th gear ) to avoid MDS as much and possible and limit my idle time the best I can. My truck also just needs some TLC after 10 years like any truck would. Part of me wants to mod the truck and make it mine, but to what cost ? In my market area I am just about at the break even point financially if I got rid of it.

I feel like the logical thing is to keep it for now but at what point will a big service job like cam/lifters, or transmission repair make replacement parts/service not worth it compared to the value of the truck ? I am looking for advice on what you might do in this situation ?

If I were to get rid of this truck it would be for a new 2025 tradesman, or big horn. Basically I would look for the CHEAPEST black, 4x4, crew cab, remote start truck I could find in my area and lease it for now.
It's up to you if you really, really want a new truck. But if not, then since your actual one must be more than likely paid for also with the "milestone" maintenace you've just invested in, you'd be good for at least another 5 years or so without shelling out $$$$ besides the routine oil changes, personnally, I'd keep it for as long as it will hold and that could be for a long time.

That maintenance list looks small :p in 2024 on my '12 1500 I did:
TIPM (maks' $900)
Transfer case shift motor (cause I needed to replace the sensor which is embedded) (RA - $200)
Power Steering Pressure line (RA - $40)
Transmission Cooling lines (RA - $120)
Steering angle sensor (aka clock spring) (RA - $450)
Steering wheel Buttons (Wrecker - $40)
Steering wheel wire harness (Wrecker - $10)
Starter (RA - $130)
Battery (Cantire - $300)
A/C Evap core - (RA - $150 plus $400 to recharge)
WIN Module (aka ignition switch) - (Dealer - $500)
Exhaust manifolds (BD Diesel - $650 - they've gone up $100 since)
Drivers side fender (Got a new CAPA for free then $200 for paint supplies)
All the above $$ in CAD not counting shipping or taxes

Umm what else..

The TIPM was one of the first to go I went to the Dealer to look at new trucks 23/24 models. I'm in Canada the truck with the features i did want started at $80,000.. but also came with a ton of features I didn't want like telematics, lane keeping assist, collision mitigation, etc etc. I have a push bar on my '12 and I use it to push stuff, I don't want to be fighting the truck to do the stuff I want to do, like last night I was spreading sand/gravel so I was slow rolling with the door open, 1 foot on the nerf bar, no seat belt.. new truck wouldn't let me do that, hell the wife's '16 Durango wouldn't let me do that.

When I did the manifolds in Aug/Sept I did price out how much to R&R the motor.. $15,000 for a new long block swap over all the accessories, I'd want to slap on a high flow oil pump but the shop told me that would void the long block warranty as they get them assembled and apparently opening it up even just enough to swap the oil pump is enough to void it. grr

My '12 has quirks, but I know them, I'll probably keep the '12 til it dies then I'll still weigh fixing or replacing. But to each person it's a choice as to what's "worth it" I do as much as my own work as I can.

182k on my 2014 Bighorn and have no regrets, I will do as others have said and drive it till the wheels fall off. It has a newer used 70k trans installed due to slipping, but just did a full 4 inch zone lift and many other upgrades. The only issue I am having is the dang rocker panels rotting out up here in MI. My truck looks great, but the thought of putting another 4-5k in it to fix the rockers is a tough pill. The engine runs great and once you're past the typical 150k I think the lifter/cam issue isn't an issue for it. I love pocketing my previous payment and banking for the next repair/upgrade.
I am a fleet manager and I see the newer stuff and it just makes me twitch funny when I see all of the complex crap they have. I am seriously considering my next truck to be a Ram D150 and restore it. I love the simplicity of them and the looks are the best.

I've always gone with the cheapest vehicle is the one you own, my dad told me that when I first got my license. If you can fix it yourself you save some money, if you need someone else to do it, unless it's the cost of a new vehicle, you're still cheaper than buying a new or new/used one to replace it. All really depends on what you want to do, mine is paid off so for me to look at something newer, never brand new, I can justify it more then if I owed on it still

Buy nothing new.
It's not that simple for me. At some point it only makes sense to replace a vehicle. The decision on whether to buy new or used depends on a few things. My thinking used to be to keep driving a vehicle until it is no longer reliable enough to make the types of trips I regularly make. There is nothing worse than breaking down while on the road. The problem back then was that I replaced an unreliable old car with a slightly more reliable old car lol. But I was usually able to fix them myself. That was back in the 80's and early 90's when I didn't the money to buy something new, and refused to finance anything in order to avoid debt. Then for about 25 years I still bought used vehicles but they were much newer and more reliable. When they would break down I would fix them myself. Now that I'm retired I still do general maintenance myself, but don't have the interest in fixing it myself when something breaks, other than minor things. So I buy new vehicles and take advantage of the new vehicle warranty. And generally trade them in before the warranty ends. The exception is our 2020 Limited. We put less than 5k miles per year on it so it's still like new. It only has 19k miles on the odo.

I guess my point is it probably depends on what stage of life you are in, and obviously, your financial situation, when deciding whether to buy new or used. How much is that new car smell (and everything you get with that) worth to you?

I’d pay the truck off and then put the payment away in the bank to cover future repairs/parts. My 2008 Big Horn (paid off in 2012) runs and tows fine. I personally love the feeling of no payments, wife’s car too! My payment account has grown large enough that if I ever need a new truck I’ll likely be able to short term finance or maybe pay cash. (In this screwed up world probably take a loan and pay it off in 90 days to get pricing)

I have 238K on my 2012 Laramie Longhorn. I've replaced some parts before they broke and some after they broke. Nothing major has ever failed on this truck. Of course I take really good care of it so it takes really good care of me. I change the oil religiously at 5-6K miles. It still runs like a top. I was going to have the engine rebuilt at ~250K, but it still runs strong, so I might push it out to 275. I just can't justify spending the kind of money they want for a new truck when this one is in excellent condition (and it doesn't spy on me like the newer ones do).

I have bought used cars , and one new CRV last time as we wanted awd
I have bought lots of used trucks and a few new ones
Just go into a dealer and price out new and good used ones
I think you’ll have your answer

Back when the shortage was a problem, dealer offered new price to us for both the car and truck
Both have real low mileage.
But no point in selling them .
