Hey everyone - so interesting scenario with my 2005 5.7: About 2 months ago I replaced the thermostat and CHT/coolant temp sensor as my truck was getting to the 2/3 to 3/4 temp in normal stop & go traffic. Everything ran great, I towed a trailer up to Redwoods park and back to Orange County and only got to the 1/2 way mark while climbing the grapevine (I5).
Back to this week: Driving to work on Thursday morning it was about 75º F outside, cruising on the freeway at about 70mph my temp gauge was at 1/2-way. This is about 210º based on the old thermostat but I installed a 160º thermostat so I should be around 160-170º cruising. I take off the radiator cap Friday morning after letting the truck cool overnight and notice there's a big 'ol air gap at the top of the radiator. I have used the vacuum-fill method twice with a special tool. The system held vacuum for over 5 minutes when I was filling so there are not leaks that I can detect.
I crawled all over the engine bay ad under neath, looking for any sign of a coolant leak - I can't find anything. No soot or smell in the coolant either so I don't think there's a head gasket leak. No coolant smell or steam in the exhaust.
So... Where the heck is my coolant going?! Help?
