I have a 13 5.7 hemi, 6 speed with 3.55 gears, LSD, and 4X4 I have yet to find something this truck doesn't do well. carries 1500lb halfway across the country and never even hiccuped. Been in 18 inches of new snow and it did what it should. Would not trade my truck for much of anything.
Get the hemi you won't regret it.

I was in the same boat you are, pun intended. I have a 2014 GMC Terrain with a 4 cylinder I was towing a 19' boat with, it towed it okay. I think the boats around 3,000 lbs. with the trailer and my trailing max on that vehicle is around 1500 lbs. or 3,500 with a 6 cylinder. Anyway, I installed trailer brakes because that was my main concern, stopping. I still didn't feel comfortable towing the boat with a 4 cylinder, I didn't want to ruin the engine or trans. and the Terrain only has about 12,000 mile on it. I bought a 2003 Ram 1500 last October with a standard cab short bed(which I prefer) with 4WD that has a 4.7 with a 3.92 axle ratio and 66,000 miles on it. I haven't towed the boat yet, but I'm sure it will have enough power to tow it. I would have preferred a Hemi but I got a decent deal on the truck and it's in nice condition for it's age and has low mileage. I did want 4WD for slippery ramps, just to play safe.

5.7 Hemi
When I bought my first RAM I mulled over the 6 vs the 5.7 and chose the Hemi. I didn't tow much but as years went on I got a bigger boat and bigger pop-up camper. I also bought a car carrier trailer I started towing my 3,500# tractor on.

Besides the fact that my Hemi's have NEVER balked at any of these chores, I love that Hemi roar when I need to pass someone.

For me, it is the Hemi hands down. I know the 6 has it's place but I think I am better off with the 5.7

5.7 HEMI
HEMI all the way-it wont be working hard so mpg would be about the same and if you get a considerably heavier boat it still wont be a concern. You don't need a 2500 unless your going to a huge boat. The premium you pay for the HEMI will come back to you should you trade or sell later.

Eco diesel if you do a lot of long-distance towing. Twice the gas mileage of the Hemi with the same power. Love my ECO. I get 27 mpg combined driving to work. 30 mpg at 55 mph, 27 mpg at 65. That's not towing a load.

5.9 cummins/3.6 Pentastar
I tow a 3500# boat in the Az. mountains and I have a choice of a 5.9 Cummins or the 3.6 Pentastar in a 2018 and prefer the 3.6 because its sooo nice to drive. I get about the same mpg (15 to 16) but gas is cheaper. If you go with the 6 make sure you get the 3.55 gears that ups tow rating to 7600#. I think it boils down to how much you tow and how fast do you drive as well as how important is fuel economy to you.. The 6.4 would be overkill for 4000# so a 1500 with the 5.7 or 3.6 is the choice. When not towing the 6 gets about 4mpg better than the 8 according to fuelly averages for both motors and I have an overall of 23mpg calculated not towing w/75% hwy. I would drive both before buying and hammer the throttle to get a feel for the power. I did that and bought the 6.

With the right gears you could tow whatever with the six and it nor the tranny would be in a bind but the hemi is a good motor that has been around a long time.

Go with the 2500 and the 6.4 you will have plenty enough and then some to tow !
^^^This^^^ I went from a 5.7 to a 6.4 and the difference is amazing. At a minimum test drive both and see for yourself. Trust me :)

I don't doubt the 2500 and 6.4 would be great for towing if you did a lot of towing. I don't think the extra money would be justified for the limited towing I do. I have ordered a Laramie with the 5.7 Hemi and think it will meet my needs. Thanks all for your suggestions and input.

Everyone saying get the Hemi for the power

What did everyone do 20-25 years ago when a small block Chevy 350 made way less than 180 hp

The 3.6 makes 300 for crying out loud, I’d say it’s more than capable with the proper rear gear

The 3.6 is certainly more than capable, especially when compared to the dark ages (and a v8 struggling to make 180 hp certainly qualifies as dark times). Just personal preference, either you want the extra sound/power/performance and are ok paying more to get it, or you can save some money if you are ok having a little less power/performance. As a car enthusiast I'm always going to want more, therefore I'm on my third straight hemi and why 8/10 of the vehicles I have owned were v8's. I'm thankful for those that don't all go for the v8's or vehicle's they don't need, that wouldn't be a good situation at all. It's good there is a balance.

Hemi everyday, all day.

Ecodiesel if you tow more than 50% of the time.

Pentastart if it's free.
