Hey all,

I am new to this forum and have just bought my first dodge truck. I have had many jeeps in the passed and thought my tow pig should be mopar too. I found a 1998 Dodge RAM 2500 with the 8.0 Magnum v10. I know the engine has been known to be solid. It has the 4 speed automagical transmission. I think it is the 47RE. Anyhow, The thing had a real bad vibration and whining sound. I found a lot of play in the Dana 70 pinion bearing. I had the rear end rebuilt by my shop foreman. I work at a shop and he has been working on cars for 2 of my lifetimes so I trust him a lot.

After the rear end was rebuilt, the vibration was gone and honestly felt like a brand new truck. However the whining persisted. The whine only happens on accel and decel. If you get to that coasting point the sound is gone. The transmission does have a rough 1-2 shift so I thought maybe the pump on the trans. Old owner did have an issue with transmission fluid leaks in the passed and ever since then that rough 1-2 shift has been there. That doesn't bother me. I just hope that the whine isn't a pinion bearing whine as it was just rebuilt.
