Hello! I'm 16 almost 17 and I've been looking at getting a truck for a while now. I just found a 1998 dodge ram 1500 regular cab with a short bed with 11000 miles on it for sale. It's in pretty decent shape a tiny bit of rust but other wise it's fine. The owners are asking $3,500 obo. Would you buy it? Or does it have too many miles? And how much would you give him for it?

Is 111000 miles too many? Should I expect to replace parts?

For a vehicle that is 15 years old, that averages out to 7500 miles per year, which is well below the average. If there isn't much rust on it, it was perhaps garage kept which is even better. Hard to say what might need replacing, but if it was taken good care of, it shouldn't need anything major I wouldn't think.

a '98 Ram Reg / Short is a fun starter truck!
110,000 miles is nothing if it was maintained well.

I don't know where you're located, so I can't comment on the rust issue. I'd never buy a truck with rust issues personally, but it might be what you have to do for a starter truck. (I like in the high desert, no rust here)

Do you know some more specifics on it?
Automatic or Manual Transmission
2 or 4wd
Power Windows / Locks
CD Player
Sliding rear window
Does everything work? Windows, locks, doors shut smoothly, AC blow cold, does the heater smell like syrup?

Yep those worked! I like it. I'd say it's worth it. 3,000 would probably be a good offer like musclemekeester said.

That's a pretty clean truck. I'd say probably $2,500-3,000 as long as everything checks out(motor, brakes, suspension, transmission, interior)

Transmission would probably be the biggest worry for me. If it hasn't been replaced before now (which it probably has) it will probably need to be.

I'm a little late to this party, but I have some advice to all. Running boards like that can hide serious rocker panel rust. On a personal taste issue, the rims look "ghetto".

I don't see why not, as long as you take care of it, it will take care of you. Have a local shop check the truck out pre purchasing it can really save your wallet!

As for mileage it depends on how it was used & treated. I have a 2001 ram quad cab 4x4 with 168K mi. still runs strong & very dependable. and I've seen them trashed by 70K. My best advice is have it checked out before buying.
