Gents, Have towed a bunch with my 21PW, but never had much in the bed..See any issues with a yard of fill in the bed? Need to travel about 70 miles, and I'll be solo in the truck with very little gear.. thanks for any input!

Assuming you are talking about fill dirt or topsoil, you will probably be exceeding the payload capacity. Different types of soil, and how wet it is, can vary in weight drastically but would expect that to be at least 2,000 - 2,500 lbs. I'm not part of the payload police that will jump on here and say the truck will break in half, kill a bus full of nuns, and say you will go to prison over this.....but in general that is a pretty good load. If you driving backroads for 10 miles I wouldn't even think twice about it, but 70 miles (and presume freeway speeds?) I would at least think twice. If it was light fill probably no issue, but my concern would be if it was really heavy and weight.

Should be fine, but the power wagon springs I believe are a bit softer than the regular trucks so it may sag more than I suspect. If it's real wet I'd say wait until there's been some sunshine for a few days at least. Wet it could easily hit 2 tons. Dry maybe 1.25 to 1.5 ton. You'd be a lot better off if you had a trailer to haul it. Also it's not like they measure it to load it. Just scoop it up and dump it in. In the past I've had them dump slow and stop them when the truck looks like it's as low as I'm comfortable. If I end up shorted a bit so be it, but now I just pay the Trucking and have a tandem haul it since most of my projects need lots of material.

Payload = 1560, Yard of dry soil = 2100, Yard of wet soil = 3000

actually, a yard of dry top soil weight 1750 pounds

You mentioned that you are hauling fill
you mentioned Fill, is that sand & rock, or something else ?

sand & rock could weigh as much as 1.3 ton per yard

Two trips is way cheaper than fines or truck problems when I loaded my pw it was sketchy on the freeway how do you know how much weight you are carrying is there a scale on the loader or do you go by guess and by golly. Play it safe

By the way I run a loader in a gravel pit and have loaded lots of pick up trucks including my own. I always leave it to the driver of the truck how much they want. I’ve seen guys leave with their bumpers on the road and other people take a wheel barrow. I think more trips is better

Cubic yard, square yard, estimated yard?

Long ton, short ton?

I'm still wondering why on earth you would need to drive 70 miles for fill dirt. It's less about the weight than the extreme distance.

I haul all sorts of stuff in my trucks. From typical lumber or appliance runs from Lowes to creek rock or mulch. I loaded my poor old Dakota to the bump stops with 30 to 40 bags of wet mulch more than once. My Ram last hauled over 1000lb of laminate flooring. But these trips were all 10 to 15 miles, tops.

I think in the OPs case I would def rent or borrow a trailer or pay to have the stuff trucked in maybe from somewhere closer. That's a long dang way.

I hope that who ever loads your Ram, uses a BackHoe or Skip Loader, the front bucket is smallish, holds about 3/4 to 1 1/3 yards

Where as a Front Loader, bucket is much wider & holds at least double that amount

May i suggest that you lay down a plastic tarp that will cover the trucks bed bottom & both sides,
also lower your tailgate while who ever is dumping the soil into the bed.

Doing that will protect your paint & the tailgate
Even a expert equipment operator can slip when working with hydraulics

A little loader like that shouldn’t be a problem for a good operator. Might want to have a little less in the bucket though lol. Fooling around I’ve loaded a 5 gallon bucket with a 988 mining loader. I think you would be better off just getting a tandem gravel truck to deliver it to save time and hassle

I know that if i want a dump truck with any type of material from the Asphalt plant, even crushed recycled asphalt.
The truck & driver cost more than the material, at least at the plant closest to me, Vulcan Materials Company
