Hey everyone, first post here. Hoping some of you might be able to help me out. I have a 2017 ram 1500 outdoorsman, 10,000 kms, 5.7 hemi, 8 speed, 3.92 gears, daystar levelling kit, 5000 lb airlift bags in the back and 295/65R20 toys a/t's. I use this truck for hauling my 5000# 21' travel trailer.

I realize now that I made a mistake putting the 35" toyo's on there, towing mileage is through the roof. Still has power to spare but I'm wondering if I'm going to kill my transmission?

The transmission is making a sound similar to a bad wheel bearing. Trans temp was 92 deg Celsius, makes sound in 5th, noticable loss in power. Noise went away and power returned when transmission down shifted. Only makes the noise when towing pulling hard up a hill.

It did this twice today while pulling long hills in the mountains, was a hot day. I'm going to downsize to a 33" tire, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Is this foreshadowing future transmission problems? Was I just pushing it too hard and have nothing really to worry about?

Coolant temp 93 deg C
Trans temp 92 deg C
Engine oil temp 112 deg C

Is this truck going to die if all I do is haul a trailer with it? I'd like to trade it in for a 2500 but I'll lose my shirt on it. Thanks for any input you might have on this.

Even with 35s I don't think you are doing anything to outright kill the tranny. But I would worry about warranty coverage so going back to stock tires is probably a good idea. The 3.92 gearing is plenty for that truck with the trailer you have.

fwiw, the tranny in my 2500 completely blew apart @ 38K on a completely stock truck and I hadn't towed in weeks. So, it happens.

Thanks, here's a few shots of it tucked away. I'll downsize to a 33 for now and see what happens over the next few trips.

I'd put the stock tires\wheels back on it and do the same tow, same weight and see if it makes the noise.

If it does, your under warrenty, take it in and let them check it. Take the tech for a ride with the trailer attached so he can hear the noise and document it. Good luck

You may have a transmission issue but it's not from the tires or load. I tow TTs commercially with my 3.92 ED to 9,100 pounds 340,000 miles. Routine maintenance only no transmission issues.

Is your toy car a mid to late 70's Camaro?

I tow a 5500 pound travel trailer in the same conditions as you and I have not heard anything unusual coming from the trans.

You are using tow/haul right?

A trans temp of 92 C is 197.6 F and IMO not bad at all while towing. Your other temps look Ok to me too.

If you're getting that noise now, downsizing to 33s won't change the fact that something is wrong. The 8 speed is safe to (I believe) 570 ft lbs of torque. I ran that size rubber with zero issues or noise and a heavier trailer. Take it in. Something isn't right. Your trans temp also looks a little low to me for that 8 speed while towing.

On a hot day those temps don't seem out of wack.

I tow ~5400 lbs 22 foot TT and typically see 104 to 106 C on oil temp. Trans doesn't climb at all really at 88C. coolant temp always less than oil.

The noise is a concern.
