I have a 2003 1500 5.7L Hemi and I haul a horse trailer I don't have any problems except when there is hills and stuff it rpms and I feel sorry for it so I try to rodeo within reasonable range and if it gets to be a long journey I do have access to my moms 1 ton Cummins which obviously doesn't have a problem. But I was thinking maybe an upgrade to a 2500 (gas) might be something for me to consider? What is the difference, body style I know for 1 and then a bigger tank but I do have mine leveled and will be putting in blocks in the rear because with the 35s it squats big time before it didn't stock tires. Its modded though so I think I may be equivalent to a 2500 I don't think they have different horse power or anything just the frame can handle more weight? My trailer is 5,000 lbs max I think without the horse who is 1100 lbs my truck can do 7,000 maxed out if I remember correctly so I am close give or take. Also, I think I'd stick with a 3rd Gen for insurance purposes. Also I do have a programmer for tow haul which I haven't tried I have just stayed on econo since summer. And I haul once or twice a month nothing to heavy.

If you are going to stick with a 3G Ram, stepping up to a 2500 will still help, but not as much.

Having a heavier truck helps with towing safety. Larger brakes, stronger driveline will be beneficial as well.

If you're going to level the 2500 and put larger tires on it, you're going to make it tow worse. The hemi is a very capable motor and will do it just fine, but you'll be taxing it more.

The Gen III and Gen IV (up to 2013s) are the same suspension / axles, largely just a newer Hemi and better trans in the 12+s.

You may look at the insurance differences between Gen III and IVs, often times the latest generation are cheaper because of parts availability. Don't use reason, use facts.

I would at least look at a 2500 Hemi, there are some good ones out there that will meet your demand.

Put airbags in it that'll solve the squatting issue or put heavier leaf springs in.

If it's paid for, I would just do bags and gears.
