Towing, my 6.7 seemed to get about 3 mpg better. Granted that was after $2k worth of deletes that definitely helped it. Haven't really determined empty yet. Driving 500 miles unloaded highway next week. Going to see and report my findings. *My 6.4 only had 4k miles on it so probably not entirely fair. I hear they loosen up well around 10k.

I would recommend skipping right past the 4.10's to something steeper. IMO, it's still not enough to make up for the lazy 1-3rd trans ratios.
I just swapped my 3.73 for 4.88 last month. I have only towed a few short trips but so far i would do it again in a heartbeat. This thing pulls like a truck again. On the interstate 350 mile trip averaging between 65 and 80 mpg i got 1 mpg less than i normally do.

Towing average is 11-12 vs 14-15 with my horse trailer. Before deletes when the 6.7 was actually legal to drive more like 12-13. With more weight it seems to tighten up more. Maybe only a difference of 1-2 with deletes.

My fuel experience is closer to the average ST mentioned but I'm either around town or hooked to a trailer highway....rarely do I put many miles on highway without a trailer.

I've found that towing 5-8000lbs with some payload as well is a 10.5-12mpg event. Which is exactly what I expect with 3.73s and 35" tires.throw in some stop and go highway traffic or massive headwinds and I'm towards the 9.5-10.5 range towing but making plenty of power......as in, I've never felt under powered with that load size, nor should I.

We have a trip from MA to VA to PA back to MA planned with the travel trailer this summer, probably be pulling at 5,000lbs or so + several hundred in payload. Be curious how that tows and what I get for mileage. To date I have only towed that trailer with our Lexus GX, and get 10-11mpg doing so amazingly......but I have to keep stuff light for the most part (although full water tank).

I did have that inexplicable 17.x mpg 3400 trip to NC a couple years ago......seems like some days if conditions are perfect it can get reasonable mpg.....but "average" 15-17 for me hasn't been attainable.

Wow, what you are stating you get towing a horse trailer with your 6.4L is about what the average owner gets unloaded. Not sure how you'd expect to get much better than that. Although it is strange that you got better than average with one and not the other. Usually driving habits will cause you to be the same in both. Looking at the numbers, your 6.7L must have been a pre-DEF year model.

Precisely. It was a 3rd gen pre def. Just did half of my unloaded hwy trip today. KCMO to STLMO. Going back Wednesday so will report hand calculation. Lieometer said 18 even .

The odd thing about my Cummins is that EVIC go more accurate after deleting. Before it was deleted, my EVIC would show 17-18 mpg, but in reality I was getting around 15 mpg. After deleting, my EVIC shows 18-19 mpg, but my hand calculated number is generally around 17 mpg.

75-80 mph all highway with 5 passengers. Indicated 17.7. Hand calculated to 15.7. My 6.7 would have indicated 18-19 and gotten around 2 mpg better than the 6.4. Calculating that 400 mile trip out using 89 octane at 2.70 and diesel at 2.99 (prices here right now) the gas engine would cost me $1.21 more for the entire trip. If using 87, which I did because I didn't tow, the gas engine actually saved me a tiny bit.

Gasbuddy shows 87 at $2.70, and 89 being the same at around 3.00 in both KCMO and STLMO.

Wrong. Numbers are exactly as I quoted down the road from my house. See attachment.

Actually this is the one closest to me. Indifferent from the other. You will find higher taxes in the city and variability from station to station I suppose but I was basing it off of where I bought fuel .

Just saying, Gasbudy St. Louis shows differently. Although it is known in the diesel world to never get fuel at truck stops because they generally have the highest diesel prices.

10k miles on the hemi and haven't missed the Cummins yet. I wanted the biggest gas engine I could get in a 2500 and I like it! My kids laugh and giggle when I give 'er the onion, they call it the 'Hemi stomp'.

Just for the heck of it, I just filled up and figured my gas mileage on my 2018 Cummins. I don't normally worry about it, but this thread had me curious. 390 miles of a mixture of in-town and highway driving took 24.85 gallons of diesel to fill up (at 2.90 a gallon) for a 15.69mpg average. And that's with a 35x12.50x20 wheel/tire combo and I don't have a real light foot. Not too bad.

Edit: The trip gauge said I was getting 17.1mpg. It lies.

That isn't bad considering the tires and being stock. Stock, mine was always a little less than that every tank I wasn't towing, but the 75+ mph speed limits here will do that. Deleted I am always around 17 mpg when not towing.

I was hesitant to get into a gas 2500, as my previous 5 were diesels, amazingly, no regrets so far. I have been 1 year away from my 2016 Cummins, with a Jeep Wrangler, and needed to make the jump back into a truck. I am kind of shocked that I do not miss the diesel at all.

Do any of you wish you had not gone to a 6.4? Ram has really done a great job with it!

To be fair, I no longer tow, and I didn't tow with my 2016 either, but I still don't really miss it. I'm just honestly surprised at how much I like the 6.4

I tell you what I miss. My brother had a 1994 2wd long bed club cab Ram with the 12v and 5 speed....I still miss than truck. It would get 26-29 mpg unloaded and would pull our 3500lb regal and 35ft enclosed trailer like nothing. It would still get 14-16 mpg pulling that junk from Memphis uphill to Bowling Green, KY. He traded it in and bought a 96 4x4 club cab with an automatic. What a pathetic POS that was. I pulled that trailer empty to Flint, MI and it barely got 10 MPG and even empty stuggled up hills in middle Tenn and KY. I even called him and told him I thought something was wrong with it. He said no, it's just detuned to make the automatic live. I laughed and said you need to trade this crap back in and get a 5 spd!!

That was a great truck!

Nope. Love the 6.4L it's a GREAT engine.

I'm getting about 15mpg's combined driving hand calculated and that's with 4.10 gears (and 14,000 miles and summer gas.)
