I try to wash 1X a week but have 2 other cars to take of. But I wax 1 vehicle a month. As far as the interior all I do is empty it, wash off floor mats and take an electric leaf blower to the inside .
When I bought the truck I was living in Michigan. Summertime once every week, usually on Fridays after work or Saturdays after work. Wintertime I would run it through the carwash once sometimes twice a week with the underbody wash. Usually detail a few times a year. Spring, summer twice, fall, and after hunting season. Once I move back to Michigan I may be getting a vinyl wrap before the snow starts to fall.
If you are washing and waxing correctly you shouldn't be getting any swirl marks. Regardless of how much or how little you wash/wax. Swirl marks are caused by inappropriate methods or by automatic car washes.
I bought my 2003 Ram new and drove it 15 years. Once every week or two, I'd run it through the local car wash for washing, wax, and RainX. The silver paint and finish looked as good as new when I traded it in. It wasn't garaged and was exposed to the hot Texas sun daily. Ram paint is good stuff.
I think it looked just fine---hell you drove a couple 100 miles in that crappy weather---besides the judges didn't even have the courtesy to take the time to correctly judge the trucks---IMHO

If you use wax, it will only protect for app. 3-4 weeks. If you use a good sealant it will last about 6 months. You can always put wax over the sealant if you like.
