How many miles are on it? That's crazy having that many problems. Might have fried it when it was low on fluid.

In my opinion, trans temp would have to be verified with scan tool/thermometer/thermal imagery (which is likely to be accurate). Once that is done, perhaps the correlation of your poor MPG, and trans overheating could be attributed to a failing torque converter.

FYI a thermal imaging camera is useful for finding blockages in cooling systems, be it oil, trans fluid, or coolant.

I'm surprised they aren't blaming it on lift/tires.

Dang it, I need to stop reading some of this issue threads. I've notice the last few weeks my transmission temp has been running between 186 and 190 while driving in mixed traffic. Truck has no lift and 35 inch tires. Today the transmission reached 205 degrees while I was stuck in a traffic jam for an hour. Every now and then I have also heard a high pitch whine while in first and second, which I'm pretty sure is coming from the transmission. Doesn't make the sound in park or neutral. Today when I heard the noise I put the truck into tow/haul mode and the sound went away and my transmission temperature dropped 10 degrees.

My truck has had transmission problems from the start. I've had the shift solenoid replaced twice under warranty at 2500 and 25000 miles. Guess its going back to the shop soon.

Anyone have any troubleshooting advice before I take it in? I have little trust for my dealership after my last couple visits. Last trip I asked them to flush the brake fluid and the service tech only vacuumed out the reservoir. Took several hours to get them to complete the job correctly.

My 2016 6.4 with 4:10 gears never has a trans temperature above 172F. This includes towing a 9200lb trailer.

Does the 66RFE have a trans cooler thermal bypass valve(thermostat) like the 68RFE? If so, this may be the culprit for some of you. There have been a few people in the Cummins forums with bypass valves that were not operating correctly and they were seeing temps like this. Most of them just removed it since it is mainly their to get the trans fluid up to temp quicker in colder weather and nothing more.

Trans temp for me stays under 170* when towing a 7K lb travel trailer. Never seen it go over 175* even in the Smoky mountains.

Grabbed a quick picture after dropping the kids off at school. These were the temps after 20 minutes on the highway no trailer or load.

SouthTexan, thanks for the suggestion. I'll ask about the bypass when I get the truck in.

Mattera350, any updates on your truck?

Same temps here, 168 normally and maybe 174 when hot and towing etc.

Truck went to the dealer (trans got stuck in first) at 242* trans temp 89* outside verified temps with a scan tool n heat gun rechecked trans fluid after new filter n fluid change once again low on fluid right after the dealer serviced it. While towing I see temps 250+* will be back to the dealer this week I’m going to assume the trans is fried at this point. For a new truck n all this issues thinking about sending the truck for a stage 3 trans and aux cooler to try and keep the temps around 160*

They blamed my fuel pump and evape vent lines on the lift but covered it after I argued a suspension lift will not hurt fuel lines as I’m lifting the suspension the only lines for potoenial issues would be break lines. Long story short multiple trips and attempts to fix it that issues finally taken care of now Dealing with this trans the truck does tow 12-13k when first bought it had no issues with trans temps about 4 months into owning it the the trans would not go into park. The radio freezes were I have to disconnect my battery to have it work again. Filed with fca for Lemmon law as I just hit 24k miles and all these issues I’d expect to see on a older truck not a 17

Truck will be back to the dealer this week as it is stuck in 1st after they serviced the trans and low on fluid again maybe an internal leak as there is no spots under the truck.
