And well, one more question- they wrote in the comments section that they saw no reason why I shouldn’t be able to go as far as 7,000 miles on that oil change, or for future oil changes. How would you guess they came up with that number? Did maybe I get kind of a freebie on that TBN test since it was my very first report, or was possibly because they’re in the business of testing and analyzing oil that they just perhaps gave me their best educated guess based on the results they found?

I would think it is an educated guess based on the trends they see in other hemi engines and calculating the rate of the add pack degrading.

does anyone have to top off 20 weight a lot? I never topped off redline 5w30, never needed to even a little.

I needed just under a quart over 6k miles, yikes. I'm caulking it up to the plowing because I never add ANY in the spring, summer, and fall. She needed a tit of ATF too...

This is just my opinion and I don't have the knowledge that folks like rlk, burla, u&a And others have.

Your oil selection is based on oci as well as where and how you drive your truck. Also, in our case, we have to consider our lifetime warranty. Also consider your sir filter.

That’s a good point. Although as I’ve said, if I was running some high-class oil, probably a good, eventual UOA would probably convince me to run a lot higher OCI but, we’re talking about a pretty good, well-known oil to convince me of that. Lol.

As far as how I drive my truck, I don’t tow much at all and when I do, it’s just a little short trip with my little utility wagon for when the 5’6” bed just ain’t big enough. I try not to idle too terribly much, I do kinda drive it a little hard because well, let’s face it, it runs good, and that Pedal Commander and Carven Exhaust just makes it easier and more desirable to do....lol. But no, all in all, I am fairly easy on my truck. It doesn’t see hardly any dirt roads at all.

@cornelius it costs me with shipping 90.54 with preferred customer, now I usually order a case and a couple filters at a time to get free shipping. My last order was for 4 filters, case of 0W-40 SS, and a Gallon and 3 qts of 5W-30 SS. It cost $158 to my door. I have enough oil now for two changes in both the Ram and Durango.

2018 2500 6.4 4x4 4.10 Amsoil SS 0w-40, Softopper
Black Rhino Armory 18x9 +12mm
Cooper St MAXX LT295/70R18

2016 Durango 5.7 AWD 3.07 Amsoil SS 4 Qts 5W-30 and 3 Qts 0W-40
1996 Nissan Altima 2.4 Amsoil SS 5W-30

So that 90 bucks- that’s just enough oil to do one vehicle? That also is oil only, right?

I take it you use an Amsoil filter too?

I would think for comparison you will need to do a an analysis at close to the same mileage interval. Depending on your mileage, it may not be an accurate comparison if your engine is still breaking in though.

Makes sense. Probably oughta use a Wix XP filter too.

But yeah, I curious to see what my next oil analysis is, to see when the break-in wear will find a stopping place.

So if you buy ahead of time it's around $80/oil change.

Considering the dealer wanted $120 to change 6 qts of crap bulk oil in my wife's Grand Cherokee, I consider $80 for a much better oil a pretty good deal[emoji106]

On that note, I might as well just use up the last of my PUP before i do anything. I bought enough oil for three changes a year ago this February.

The $90 is for oil and filter and shipping, but if I order more than $100 I get free shipping, so I buy enough for two oil changes at a time. I also get a hefty discount on the PI Fuel treatment

Oh well that’s not bad. Considering you’re getting an almost 20 dollar filter for free.

Another question for y’all....

When Chrysler says in the book that under no circumstances should oil changes ever go over one year, or ten thousand miles, are they basing that off the semi-synthetic they fill with, and their corporate cellulose filter, or are they basically stating that no matter what premium oil or extended life filter you use, you can’t go over that?

I was just wondering, even if I did decide to try the XL Amsoil, and their filter to the full 12,000 mile expectancy they claim, even with an oil analysis that proves the oil was just fine, are they, or would they even have a leg to stand on when they have a fit because you went over what they said about maximum OCI’s?

I would say that would be a bigger issue because that doesn’t say recommend, it says under no circumstances, much more black and white vs grey with recommend 5W-20

Well yeah, I can see that. Under no circumstances means under no circumstances but like I said, if that’s truly based on their bottom of the barrel oil and filter then that really, in a sense, shouldn’t apply to something better, even when you had an oil analysis report to prove it.

I see you are relitively new member, so for info sakes, super class oils are oils in 0w40 made to skirt api rules on 30 weight oils but often have best base oils with that to stay in grade and get the top specs. So on paper they are 0w40, but in your vehicle they are mostly 5w30. They are built right on the low viscosity edge of what it takes to be a 40 weight oil, and they have more additives. Castrol, M1, and PUP all 0w40 are super class, there are others as well, those are on the top of my mind. If you will run a 30 weight in your truck, don't be afraid of 0w40 if it is on the line like these oils, they shear to 30 weight in no time and can be thinner then 30 weight at the end of a cycle.

But, make sure on stat sheet operating visc or cSt is near 12.5, some 0w40's are not super class, they are thick oils and not made to be 30 weights. Castrol is one of the very special 0w40's, so if you stay with that you are good. BTW, the oil many of us run is redline 5w30, just for comparison sakes that cSt is 11.9, so your castrol 0w40 is only .6 thicker then that 5w30. So If it was too thick, so would redline be, but we all have ran that for 7-8 years with no issues as far as thickness goes. look at stat sheets when considering any 0w40, specifically operating temps.
