Took the truck, into the Dealership, due to (what I believed) was broken Exhaust bolt chatter, Drivers side.
Had the passenger side, done, awhile back and figured to get drivers side done, b4 I ran out of warranty.

Service Advisor calls me up and said what I was hearing was from bad Tappets.
Oil was draining down, overnight. When engine started, the Tappets chattered until oil pump could lift the oil, up to the top of the engine.

Said it would need new camshaft and tappets. Once they were inside, they would see what else was needed, if anything, but this is common issue for Hemi's that idle a lot and generally Cam/Tappets took care of it. Mostly Cop cars and the like.

Odd, since my truck hardly ever idles and is mostly doing 70mph, down the interstate.
Parts should be in, by Tuesday with the Truck work done by Thursday, unless they find it needs more internal repairs.

Everyone has been pleasant as Rainbow, thus far. Put me in a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Rental.

Had my pick and neighbors been talking of getting one.
This way, she can drive it, to her hearts content. without pushy salesperson.

Searched the forum and internet. Seems oil seeping down, thru tappets, is not uncommon and reason guys go with 5W-30W, though still researching all that.
Truck has never had anything but PUP 5W-20W.

Will keep you guys informed.

That stinks...sorry to hear that but at least it's being covered under warranty.

Hope all is well going forward. How many miles are on it and do you lock out mds on a regular basis?

one of the things i've been rolling around in my head regarding cam and lifter replacements on warranty is if anyone has had the hellcat lifters and cam installed by the dealership (out of their pocket for any cost above the replacements cost of course) and had the dealership ok to delete the mds. people often talk about having this done, but i don't recall anyone saying the dealership has been willing to do it.

mopar non mds lifters

but i didn't find a mopar performance cam to go with them, so maybe that's the wrench in that idea?

Here you go Terry, the stage 2 kit is a basic cam upgrade kit

You'll notice Ma Mopars cam kits include these Tie Bars to tie the rocker stands together,Well worth having if you're upgrading the cam and valve springs and plan on spinning the motor above 6,000 fairly often.

2014 Crew Cab, short box, 5.7 hemi, 8 speed, 3:92 with 97,000 miles on it.
I drive 187 miles, one way, to work. Average of 4 to 5 times a month.

truck gets remote started, a few times, in Winter. Other than that, it rarely Idles.

Have never disengaged MDS but been reading up on it.
Seems like even those who do use a tuner to prevent MDS, still have Cyl #5 tappet issues.

Would love to upgrade cam and lifters but that would me on my dime, which sure ain't going to be done at a Dealership Shop.
Got a Mopar Certified Mechanic Son-in-Law for that kind of stuff.

I do know I am not a fan of the Jeep Cherokee.Too Little.
1984 Grand Wagoneer -= that was a nice car.
Jeep been missing the Mark, ever since.

If I crunched the number correctly, you're spending aprox $3366 just on gas, just to go to and from work, in a year. Ouch! Plus 3 or 4 oil changes, more ouch.

I find that very strange. Not that it happened, but that they call them "tappets" instead of lifters:rolleyes:.

Talk nice to them and you might be able to upgrade the cam to the one out of the 6.4 cars. The manual transmission Challengers use a non-mds cam, while the A8/automatic cars still use MDS.If you want to delete the mds the stick cam would be a nice upgrade,if not use the automatic's cam. They might tell you no,but worth at least asking

Lets do some more math.

My Boys Hyundai gets 40mpg, interstate.
My Truck gets 18mpg, interstate.(Sometimes 17, rarely 19 but just figure 18)
SO, If drove his Hyundai, I would save 22 miles per gallon.
Todays fuel, here, is $2.62
Drive is 187 miles , 8 times per month.

Hyundai is 187 miles divided by 40mpg times 2.62 gas price is 12.24
Truck is 187miles divided by 18mpg times 2.62 gas price is 27.21

Truck 27.21 minus Hyundai 12.24 means it costs me $15, one way, to drive my truck.
Round trip (Home-work-home) means I pay that 15 twice, for 30

30 per work round trip times 4 round trips per month times 12 months per year
30X4X12=1440 more to drive the truck, per year.

$1440, PER YEAR. That's what I could save driving a 40mpg car (Hyundai)

Oh, crap, I got to buy that new Hyundai, which I do not need, for any purpose other than drive to and from work, for fuel savings.
Whats new Hyundai price divided by $1500 gas savings, per year, to get break even point versus driving a truck that I MUST have to pull the boat?

13.3 years for that Hyundai to pay for itself.
Again, I drive a Truck.

If I can ever get the Wife into a Suburban,
I might be driving a Hellcat to Work.
Long as she will trade during Crappie Spawn season.

Oddly enough, I just worked with a Conductor who has a 2018 Mustang G.T.350.
He drives about 40 miles to work. probably 10-12 times a month. He's Greedy XBRD ****.
Single Guy, He drives a Chevy Spark. He also has a F-150 and a road trip Luxury Car.
He mentioned his 2013 Mustang , which he traded in for his 2018, only had 4000 miles on it.

I told him he was an Idiot.
Buy what you like then drive it.
If it dies from use and you still like it, rebuild it.
If not, buy what you do like and drive IT

FWIW, this 2014 Ram IS a concession to Fuel Economy.
I drove a 1999 Dodge 2500 Quad cab, long box, 4X4, V-10, for 15 years and 197,000 miles
at gas prices back then. Truck would pull everything, as fast I wanted to drive, as long as I wanted to drive, Up Hill & Down. (9mpg, Empty -- 6 mpg, Loaded up)

Once I bought this Ram, for the fuel savings and because I did not need The Beast's Pulling Power, Gas prices dropped like a Rock and I wished I had rebuilt that Dodge.

Still Do.
