I just ordered more Redline C+ from Nick @ gotexhaust.com.

With my Mag-Hytech pan with the drain plug I've decided to do an annual drain and refill ,this may be excessive but it makes me feel better [emoji16]

Same here[emoji106]

Changing it annually will flush out any contaminants and clutch material and will do nothing but help keep the transmission running smooth for years to come. Plus it’s an opportunity to check and clean the magnet on the drain plug...

My 4x2 2012 1500 4.7 liter doesn't have the TPV, but does have HD trans cooler listed on the spec sheet. My truck was built as a Government truck for OK, not a cold climate.

New member Question.
2012 Ram 1500 4x2 4.7 liter with HD trans and engine cooler, no TBV.

Plan to pull a 4500 lb TT this summer.
Bought aftermarket (standard capacity) pan with drain plug and a trans cooler, waiting to be installed. Base truck with no information center on the dash, and my OBD2 with Dash Command doesn't give the option for trans temp. I'm working with DC to get the PIDs, but so far no luck.

I have noticed an odd feeling to the shift points 2nd to 3rd from what I can tell, but nothing too annoying.
Truck has 74k and I want to change ATF before summer. I'd love to have a transmission temp gauge so I know if the extra cooler is really necessary. Trying to decide on best option. This thread is great, and I'm learning a lot, but I have a couple of specific questions.

Those of you that have temp gauges, and can monitor temps while towing, would you recommend the extra cooler or would switching to Redline C+ be enough with the factory HD cooler?

I've already purchased a case of Valvoline +4, but I can take it back. Not sure where to get Redline locally. I had never heard of it until this thread.

Does anyone else use the OBD2 with an app that has transmission temp? Wondering about Torque pro? I have the paid version of Dash Command, but can't find a PID for my truck trans temp.

Should I just skip the OBD2 and just get a aftermarket trans temp gauge?
Any brand recommendation?

Thanks in advance.

Check out Summit for fluids even Red Line.
I'd suggest changing all fluids before starting:
Coolant
Motor Oil
Axles
Transfer Case
Brake
Power Steering
Air Filter

I'm 99% sure the OBDLink application (ios/android) that comes with OBDLink dongles does trans temp, at least on my 2015 5.7 w/6 speed. I can confirm tomorrow if you want me to. I don't use it for that typically because trans temp is already in my dashboard info screen.

The trailer is a “medium” size trailer to me. So you might be ok with the factory trans cooler. Especially if you’ll be towing mostly flat and under 90’ temperatures or so. BUT if you know you’ll be towing up steep, long grades in 95’+ temperatures, then I think you’re probably going to need the extra trans cooler.

Roads in local area are mostly flat but summer temps are often in mid to upper 90s. Planning a long trip through Colorado and Wyoming.

I have a generic OBD2 reader Currently. Is the obdlink brand recommended? Does it definitely have trans temp for a 2012 Ram?

The main reason people recommend the OBDLink MX+ is it's specifically called out by AlfaOBD as fully compatible with everything in that application. It also happens that the only way to run the OBDLink software application is if you also have the OBDLink hardware. Other than those two things it pretty much just functions like the BAFX bluetooth dongles and probably most of the other ones (I only have first hand experience with the BAFX ones and the OBDLink MX+)

After the temperature outside warms up a little today I'll go confirm 100% that it shows (or does not?) transmission temperature on my 2015 Ram - I won't be able to confirm anything about a 2012 unfortunately since I only have the one 2015 truck.

Update - turns out I was wrong about the OBDLink software displaying temperature.

However AlfaOBD, while connected to the OBDLink MX+ dongle inside my 2015 Ram (Hemi/6speed) does show transmission temperature - screenshot here:

I suspect that it would work with a generic OBD2 dongle too, AlfaOBD appears to only really be picky when you're messing around with other things (adding features to the truck, changing tire size, etc) and not just when you're reading data that's on the bus already.

That still doesn't answer your question about a 2012 specifically since the 2015 is a whole different powertrain control module but this is the best I got for you. Hopefully it helps get you closer to an answer.

I have the exact same truck as you except mines a 2013 and has 440K on the clock. I would highly suggest a trans flush and a more heavy duty tranny cooler as well. Last summer my transmission reached around 190-200 and that’s in an RFE transmission, that run notoriously cool (sub 120 range.) After a tranny fluid flush it now just barely hits 110. And yes, i hate how the 65RFE acts like a CVT on some shifts.

I've noticed this as well. After running the trans hard the temps start to creep up even when unloaded. Change the fluid and it goes right back down to sub 120.

That's why I'm starting to do annual fluid drain and fills with bi annual filter changes.

Yeah, exactly. There may be weaknesses of the 65RFE, but temperatures are not one of them. I seriously don’t know how they run so cool. The 8HP70 used in the Hemi and the 845RE in my personal Chrysler 300 all reach 190+ under no load.

Thanks for the responses.

I just added a pan with drainplug to make annual fluid changes easier and I plan to switch over to Redline ATF. I have a medium duty trans cooler to install ASAP.

TheEnder, How are you able to monitor transmission temps in your 2013? My 2012 tradesman doesn't display trans temp. I'm having difficulty finding a OBD option that works with my tranny. I currently have Dashcommand, but it doesn't display trans temp for my truck.

Does the Torque app display trans temp? I could've sworn it did at least on my 2013....
