I wonder if All these dealers think this noise is normal when you go to trade your truck in? Something tells me they’ll be singing a different song then.

Trust me it’s a common noise these trucks make when mine was in the dealer getting my new 3200 stall torque converter put on I had a 2017 loaner truck with less than a 1000 miles on it that made the tick

Watch it carefully got a 2013 new and at 70000 put 2 pistons in it for pistón skirts bending and flopping in cylinder dodge replaced 6 to be on safe side! truck was always full syn and never gave an ounce of problems until then

This worries me. What were the symptoms/noises this made?

I have this same noise and have had it for 32000 miles. Brought it to the dealer and they said it's normal Hemi noise. They started a then brand new 2015 Hemi Ram and it made the same noise.

My truck recently:

Are u referring to the “tick” or the “knock” some people don’t pay attention to the knock there’s a def knock that sounds like two 2x4 hitting.

So......On a whim I stopped to saratoga ram dealership.... As I pull in a truck (ram1500) is just being started to be warned up and moved..... I hear the same thing on that one that my truck is doing . Brand new. So I guess it is normal or should I say common for these engines. Shorty after warm up it disappeared on the new one . I had the service manager come out and listen to it with me along with having him listen to my video and concern .... he had no explanation on what it was just that it happens in a lot of em ......

More than likely if yours is going away after warm up it’s just due to the cold start causing the injectors to make the ticking noise like I said it’s a common noise a simple upgrade to the injectors would probably get rid of the noise I still haven’t gotten to test the theory with the injectors I am upgrading to for my procharger install.

U keep referring to injector tick .... do u hear the “knocking” In our videos on this thread ??? That’s what I’m referring to . Check our videos out here and let me know... a distinct un rhythmic knock , hollow almost like 2x4s hitting each other

Beast, have you tried PYB 5w30? Works great for mine with the same piston slap noise.

I believe its piston slap my 16 2500 has the same noise. My 98 corvette ls1 did the exact same thing. Gone when warmed up.

same here. i too believe its piston slap. my 15 was loud even at about 8k. especially when temps got down below 40 degrees outside. it happened not after initial cold start but while it was warming up. say about 120-170 degrees. unreal. it was a lease and i couldnt wait to unload that thing. mine was much louder than the videos on this post especially in gear with brake on. almost as loud a s diesel.

The Piston slap in the Hemi's and LS motors sounds worse than it actually is. Many of these motors have gone 200k+ with no issues except some noise when you first start it up.

I have several UOAs that have low aluminum content and low wear metals showing that the piston slap in my Hemi isn't doing any damage. Just sounds awful when it's cold...

Yes way noticeable in drive with brake on. Crazy! ****** me off I only have 30k on my truck(2015) and it’s almost paid off ; but since it goes away when warm is gonna roll with it and down the toad if I have to put a new engine in or trade in I will when I have enough saved to pay cash for a new one.

Can you update the syn thread when you do this? Let us know if it is better or worse, especuially after 500 miles.

I'd look at all of the tech before buying new though. Just research what you are signing up for with heated trans and diffs etc.

Beats can you post the uoa again? here

Lemme know whSt u think. I had higher silicone but could be from new intake manifold replacement and gaskets . That’s why I’m doing another one in the spring.

Interesting for sure, you see elevated copper and iron, but every redline uoa first run is that. Then, they usually go down exponitially, been said many times here, it may just be leaching ions that levels out with long term use, nearly every redline uoa's show the same thing.

However, more interesting is that it seams like redline may be protecting against your piston slap as you see the aluminum come down considerably. Whatever you chose to do I'd be doing another uoa and watch aluminum specifically. If you move to pyb and it goes back up, you may want to go back to redline. Subsiquently, if you stayed with redline and the copper and iron didn't come down, you might want to find a different oil on the front as well. Many choices here, but that uoa kind of dictates you need to do another one. You can leave tbn off, just know if you are going to run pyb the first time maybe do a 5k mile interval. The engine is working well, not hard of oil at all.

If it were me, I'd do another redline run and go a little futher and do a uoa, but either strategy makes sound sense, a pyb run would be helpful as well.

Heres one I made a couple years ago. Happens every cold start but its a lot louder when its cold out. So far at 59k no ill effects from it.
